Edmonton Police Investigate Possible Hostage-taking

Police in Edmonton say they are dealing with a man reported to be holding as many as nine people hostage in downtown Edmonton.

A local radio station says man, armed with a high-powered hunting rifle, entered the Workers’ Compensation Board building. CHED says a shot was fired in the lobby, but no one was injured.

The man reportedly has a beef against a doctor from the compensation board. The radio station says he is 'mad at the world.'

According to a board spokeswoman, their building has been evacuated. She was not able to confirm whether there are hostages.

There are reports that police are talking to the man on the phone, and he has asked for water and cigarettes in exchange for a hostage.

Edmonton police are investigating a hostage-taking at the Workers' Compensation Board building near the Alberta legislature.

Edmonton police spokesperson Jeff Wuite said a 911 call was placed shortly before 9 a.m., reporting that a man with a gun was inside the building.

The police tactical unit and officers from the local division descended on the area and began to evacuate hundreds of people from the building, Wuite told CTV News Channel Wednesday morning.

"We've got our negotiator team out here speaking with the man to do our best to bring this to a peaceful conclusion," Wuite said.

According to local media reports, as many as eight people may still be inside the building, which is located at 9912 107 St.

Witnesses have told CTV News a loud bang was heard in the building. However it's not clear if the source of the noise was a gunshot.

Bill Moore-Kilgannon, who can see the WCB building from his office in the Public Interest Alberta Society, said heavily armed officers made a brief attempt to enter the building.

"We saw what looked like fairly heavily armed police officers going into the building," Moore-Kilgannon told News Channel. "They didn't stay very long, they were in there maybe three or four minutes and then they came out. Otherwise, there's just a very heavy police presence on all the corners around."

A local radio station is reporting that the man has a grudge against a doctor who works for the board and is "mad at the world."

Jennifer Dagsvik, a WCB spokesperson who was not on site when the incident began, told The Canadian Press that employees who work in the building include case managers and claim adjudicators.

Police have cordoned off several streets in the area and are asking people to stay away from the scene, "simply for their own safety," Wuite said.

In certain parts of the U S I think hostage taking is the lesser crime.

I can't speak for the rest of Canada but around here they are pushing to ban smoking in condos and apartments because the units share ventilation systems. It could soon be against the law for thousands of people to smoke in their own homes.

No kidding... he should be thankful he does not have to deal with the one in Quebec - they are so ignorant they forwarded my claim to Toronto - when the claim forms are clearly Quebec's forms, and the work location is clearly identified in Quebec - guess somebody figured because the package is completely in English it didn't belong there (like how they feel about English in general)
