RAPE, ROBBERY AT MOBAY RESORT - Thugs target property, molest guests - tenants
A recent rape case added to a number of reports of robberies at a Montego Bay resort, has forced residents to reassess their security measures.
Earlier this month, it is alleged that a resident of the complex which also has rooms rented to guests, was raped. Speaking with THE STAR recently, the owner of one of the units, said that on October 2 there was a rape incident there which came after some 15 break-ins at the facility.
When contacted by THE STAR the Montego Bay police confirmed that there was a reported rape incident at the property but stated that they could not divulge any further information on the sensitive matter. They said that investigations are continuing.
appetite for cash
Another resident, who wished not to be named, said the thieves tend to have an appetite for cash, and high-end electronic items such as laptops and cellular phones. The crooks use daredevil tactics to manoeuvre themselves along the balconies of the 14-storey building, breaking into rooms.
The unit owner believes he has only been spared of being a victim so far because of the position of his quarters. "I live in an end unit and it is a lot harder to get in through the balcony door... They tried to pry open my entrance door but were scared away," he said. "I then had a metal gate made and mounted and an alarm system installed."
While residents said there have been some six to eight break-ins this year, with an equal amount last year, the police say that they could not immediately confirm those statistics.
Detective Sergeant Byron Miller of the Area One Police, however, said he recalled an incident in January where a laptop was stolen from a room at the resort. He said staffers suspected that a local 'coke-head' who frequented the Hip Strip was behind the theft but the man was never seen again.
travel warning
As recently as last week Wednesday, a post was logged online at the travel website www.tripadvisor.com where one user from the United States, debbi44, alleged that; "While staying at ... we were robbed while in our room... The robber came through balcony door and robbed us. Also they had six other break-ins that month, very crime infested place."
When THE STAR contacted the chairman of the board for the resort yesterday, he said that he had no comment on the matter. He said: "We are in a crime-infested country and you people are thinking to publish a story about this one building as if it is the only building in Jamaica."
The chairman further stated that a similar report about the resort was published before and he would rather be left alone. He directed THE STAR to talk to the police, as he did not know if the things being alleged by the residents took place.
