3 passengers allegedly raped, latest incident on weekend
If the account of a rape incident that happened last Saturday as one woman made her way to the Charles Gordon Market in Montego Bay is true, then females in that city need to exercise a lot more caution in selecting taxis.
According to information reaching THE STAR, a man who poses as a taxi operator has raped three women in that city since last month. The latest incident is said to have taken place last Saturday.
A resident, and close source to the latest victim, reached out to this newspaper yesterday, as she believes the issue is one that all commuters should be aware of. She is warning those who travel along the Coral Gardens/Greenwood Road to be especially careful, as this is the area the alleged rapist operates in.
The victim, who was still too traumatised by the incident to speak, asked her confidante to tell the tale. She said about 5:30 p.m., her friend Crayola* was making her way to the market when she stopped a cab. She said while Crayola was in the taxi, the driver reportedly started up a light conversation before telling her some minutes after that he was about to make a turn-off to pick up another passenger.
She said even though her friend was not pleased and told the driver that he should have told her this before she got in the car, she "allowed" him to carry on.
The friend said after a few minutes, Crayola asked what was taking so long for the driver to reach the destination where the supposed passenger was. He then took out his cellphone and made a call. No one picked up. The driver, the resident said, then turned around and said he was just going to forget about that passenger and head into Montego Bay and drop off Crayola.
This was when he reportedly turned on to another road saying he was going to make one last check at another house where the supposed passenger usually stayed.
The source said after the man reached a secluded spot, he stopped and told Crayola he was going to urinate. The source said after he got out of the car, he then attacked Crayola, holding a knife to her neck.
"So she scream 'don't hurt me! Don't hurt me, I'll do whatever you say just don't hurt me!" the resident said. "So he asked her to go down on him and she said she had never done that before and she didn't know how to do it."
helpless woman
The resident said the man then told Crayola to pull down her pants. The source told THE STAR that after the man had his way with the helpless woman on the front-passenger seat, when she was about to pull up her pants, the rapist said he was not done with her as yet. He then had his way with the woman again.
"After he raped her, he took her jeans and searched it. She had like $330, plus her bank card," the source said. "He took $200 and left her with $130 before speeding off."
THE STAR was told that Crayola was taken to the police station by men who observed her trying to chase the car and to whom she eventually told what happened. She was taken to the doctor where she received anti-viral shots as the rapist had not used a condom.
A policeman from the Coral Gardens Police Station says while he was not aware of Saturday's incident, there was a similar incident three weeks ago where a female employee of a popular hotel was raped under strikingly similar circumstances. The constable said that female relayed how the driver of the taxi had taken also turned off the road, claiming that he was going to pick up another passenger before she was raped. He was unable to confirm the third incident.
Attempts to get more information from the police were futile as when the Montego Bay CIB was contacted, an officer declined to comment on the matter saying that it was outside of protocol. Attempts to contact the city's communications officer were futile.
