Six bodies that were found in the home of a convicted rapist were women, officials said.

Police found two of the bodies when they went to the home of Anthony Sowell to arrest him on a rape charge. Mr Sowell, 50, of Cleveland, spent 15 years in prison for a rape in 1989.

A spokesman for the Cuyahoga County coroner said that five of the victims had been strangled. The other body was too decomposed to determine a cause of death.

Police have not been able to identify the bodies. (AP)

The identities of six murdered women found in Ohio remain a mystery today as crime scene investigators and the coroner’s office began to piece together evidence from the home of a convicted rapist.

Neighbours said they feared that missing friends and relatives were among the victims whose bodies were concealed in the house of Anthony Sowell, 50, a scrap metal dealer and beggar well-known to residents in an inner city district of Cleveland.

Sowell, who served 15 years in prison for choking and raping a 21-year-old woman in 1989, was arrested on Saturday after a woman alleged that he had attacked her. As police officers searched his house they found the decomposing remains of six women.

None of them has yet been identified but at least five of the women were apparently strangled, said a spokesman for the Cuyahoga County coroner.


Local residents gathered outside the house over the weekend fearing that their own missing persons cases would soon be solved.

Ida Garrett, 72, said that her friend Nancy Cobbs was reported missing in April. “I think one of them is her,” he said. “She seemed to be a very nice, quiet girl. I’ve known her since she was a teenager.”

Patricia Warren stood outside the three storey house holding a poster of her cousin Janice Webb, missing since June.

Police Chief Michael McGrath said Mr Sowell's history suggested that he may well have preyed on local people.

"He had a specific motive," he told the Cleveland Plain Dealer. "His victims that we know about met him on the street, and he got them to his house."

Police officers have set up a command post near the house and urged people to come forward with photographs and biographical information on missing relatives or friends.

Powell Caesar, a spokesman for the coroner, said the bodies “could have been there anywhere from weeks to months to years”.

The first bodies were found on Thursday night when police went to Mr Sowell’s home to arrest him on new charges of rape and assault, but he was not there. The woman in that alleged attack survived. She said she knew the man and was raped at the house.

As a registered sex offender, Mr Sowell was required to check in regularly at the sheriff’s office, which said he complied. Officers also visited his home, most recently on September 22, just hours before the woman reported being raped there.

Because he was not on parole or probation, officials did not have the right to enter his house, until Thursday when they had search and arrest warrants.

Mr Sowell often walked around his neighbourhood asking for money and looking for scrap metal to sell. Neighbours said he returned to the family home in 2005 after his release from prison.

Some said a bad smell came from the house several months ago, but they thought then that it might be natural gas.

Well mental health should be given the same level of recognition of other infirmities.

That is the problem with the American social standards.
They treat some mentally ill as if they should heal themselves.
And the innocent of the society pays for it with their lives.
Afterall whoi does these sick people prey on?


After-all they know that the average observer will simply condemn the sick, instead of demanding change to avoid the consequences.

Police have been called to Sowell's house several times, most recently two weeks ago when a naked woman fell out of a first floor window, suffering cuts and scrapes. She declined to press charges.

Antoinnette Dudley, 29, a neighbour in the crowd that last night held hands and prayed outside Sowell's house, said that she had been aware of a terrible odour all summer as though something was dead. She said that, in his rare appearances outside the house, she had seen Sowell sitting on his porch drinking beer. &quot;I didn't think he was that sick,&quot; Ms Dudley said.

There were complaints that the authorities had been slow to act on the stench that has been emanating from Sowell's home for years.

The owners of Ray's Sausage, a nearby cheese and sausage factory, replaced their sewer pipes and grease traps after repeated complaints to public health officials about the foul smell on the street corner.

City Councilman Zack Reed, whose mother lives a block away, said that he called the health department in 2007 after a resident told him about an odour that “smelled like a dead body”.

He said that he and other community leaders wanted an investigation into whether police and health inspectors missed signs that could have tipped them off to the bodies earlier, and even saved lives.

“We don’t want to point fingers, but clearly something could have been done differently,” said Councilman Reed.

Others were concerned that the justice authorities, who had been monitoring Sowell regularly as a registered sex offender, had delayed and missed vital clues.

Sowell, 50, was released from prison in 2005 after serving 15 years for rape. Scratching a living through begging and scrap metal dealing, he remained under the supervision of the local sheriffs who would drop by to check up on him quarterly under the terms of his parole. They did not enter his house.

The last visit they made was on September 22, just hours before a woman went to police to complain that Sowell had invited her to house for a drink, then become enraged, choking her with an extension cord and raping her.

It was not until last Thursday, October 29 - 37 days later - that officers followed up her complaint by visiting Sowell's property, where they uncovered the first bodies. Sowell was arrested on Saturday.

Of the first six bodies to be found, all were black women and five had been strangled.

Mr McGrath said that he could not assume the women who wound up dead in Sowell's house had gone there against their will. &quot;I have to believe at this point all these victims voluntarily went to this residence,&quot; he said.

Sowell was charged with five aggravated murders, rape, felonious assault and kidnapping, and was appearing in court in Cleveland today. Other charges are set to follow.

Simple, He stole the cash from a new victim everytime he need money, and his parents that owned it died and he continue to collect the social security checks. he told the neighbors that he lived of checks.

he lured the woman with drugs
