Study: Half of U.S. Kids Will Be on Food Stamps at Some Point in Life

Nearly half of all U.S. children and nearly 90% of black children will receive food stamps at some point during their childhood, according to a study published Monday in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, the AP/San Jose Mercury News reports.

The researchers said the findings have important implications for the medical community because children on food stamps often experience malnutrition and other health problems.

Researchers found that 49% of all children received food stamps at some point before age 20, including 90% of black children and 37% of white children. The study did not examine other ethnic groups

Dr. Mark Rank, a sociologist at George Warren Brown School of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis was the lead author in a new research study that found nearly half of all children in the U.S. and 90 percent of African-American children (compared to 37 percent of Whites) have been on food stamps at some point during their childhood, according to YahooNews.com.

&quot;Estimating the Risk of Food Stamp Use and Impoverishment During Childhood&quot; took analysis from 30 years of national data and predicts that this is now a medical issue because children on food stamps traditionally have illnesses linked to malnutrition and poverty. To qualify for the food stamps, a family of four cannot have an annual take-home pay exceeding $22,000. But as the recession looms and unemployment continues, more families are finding themselves in need of participating in the program.

Other study findings include:

• Nearly one-quarter of all American children will be in households that use food stamps for five or more years during childhood.
• 91 percent of children with single parents will be in a household receiving food stamps, compared to 37 percent of children in married households.
• Looking at race, marital status and education simultaneously, children who are Black and whose head of household is not married with less than 12 years of education have a cumulative percentage of residing in a food stamp household of 97 percent by age 10.

&quot;Food stamp use is a clear sign of poverty and food insecurity, two of the most detrimental economic conditions affecting a child's health,&quot; said Rank. &quot;Even limited exposure to poverty can have detrimental effects upon a child's overall quality of health and well-being.&quot;

Food stamp eligibility for a family of four:

• Monthly gross income: $2,389 or less

• Cash resources, such as a bank account: $2,000

Children dont pay for precriptions, they get preference ar doctors, there are subsidesed meals and a choice to bring in lucnces... I know children who have learning difficulty who are subsidieses... these are nessesary to strenght society...

this is not merely rascist it is an attitude of the right wing to keep a seperations... funny this idea of a negative tax going to the low pay is one of the ideas of Friedman the patron saint of the right..

I always find it odd that the default postion of the pharmasits on the rare times I go for a prescription is thye ask if I am entitled to a free prescription. but given that there seems to be help for the less fortunate this may make sense....


social investment pays off it is cheaper both in the long term and short term.. till this is realised by those who rececive it it makes no sense.. Dont they realise that their taxes goes back to them as these buffers ????

Wahalla, there are close links between race and access to public services in the US in that racial equality and access to services are inversely proportional. That's just how it is in the USA.

The Reagan-era &quot;Welfare Queen&quot; myth contributed enormously to creating the stigma you have noted WRT to using public services.

To an extent, I understand why the dad may have reacted the way he did. I think like Wahalla is saying, that it is more the negative stigma that is destructive - because as he rightly states, many of the benefits are universal in UK so no stigma.

There seems to be effort in many areas to attach negative stereotype to actions that blacks can use to improve their well-being.

For example one lawyer friend in employment law in UK outlined that whites are proportionately more likely to sue an employer for discrimination or other, than blacks, but yet the popular thinking is that black people were regarded as more litigious with regards to employment matters (for e.g. fear of race discrimination).

These stereotyping only serves to undermine the uptake of services that can actually help blacks to improve their prospects.
