In my opinion, it is a referendum on the WH - but not for the reason the repugnicants would want to consider it. The repugs shouldn't use this as a way to suggest that the pendulum is beginning to swing back their way because <span style="font-weight: bold">it isn't</span>. The numbers seem to suggest that repugnicant turn-out has remained roughly the same as last year's general election numbers. Not much of a difference. Besides, in the much-watched NY congressional race, the Sarah Palin-backed <span style="font-style: italic">horse</span> didn't win.

So, in the gubernatorial races in NJ and VA, what accounted for those GOP wins? Afterall, Obama made VA a 'blue state' in November, the popular former governor (Warner) went on to win the US Senate seat; and NJ is a solid 'blue state' for a while now.

The democratic <span style="text-decoration: underline">base</span> just wasn't excited this time, and they didn't show up in droves to give the Dem candidate the edge.

So the base came out last year to support their candidate, Obama, but this time, they mostly stayed home. Why? They just weren't inspired this time. The healthcare issue and certain foreign policy issues are examples of what progressives consider to be WH timidity - not the boldness that they thought candidate Obama stood for (or maybe they weren't paying close attention).

I think the base would hope the WH draws the right lesson: You don't water down policy proposals to suit blue dogs or conservative dems, or even the likes of Olympia Snowe; in so doing it alienates the base. Ironically, boldness and doing the right thing can sometimes mean you have to abandon &quot;bi-partisanship.&quot;

Interesting commentary; however, from listening to many folks in conversation and the media, it sounds as if people are truly &quot;angry&quot;...angry over rising property taxes to give one example, under Corzine. That in addition to the fact that Dagget was a &quot;spoiler&quot; and the Independents swung to Christie. Now, where Bloomie and Thompson are concerned; the Bronx is the only borough where Bloomie didn't win the majority of votes...it was verrry close in many areas with him winning by a mere 100+ votes eg in Coop-City..

Flatbush, Brownsville, Cambria Heights, Bed-Stuy, Harlem, and almost every area in the Bronx voting overwhelmingly for Thompson...which leads me to the question if folks voted along ethnic lines despite the fact that Bloomberg got many black votes.

As I said Bloomie spent sooo much, and gained so little in terms of the race not being a landslide. It would behoove him to STOP **chukkle* and examine why, although the pundits were saying he had a double digit margin [12-13] the<span style="font-weight: bold"> fed-up voters, black and white alike especially, sent him a very strong message that they have had enough. </span>

<span style="font-style: italic">read where they are saying that had Thompson declared his intention to run earlier, received more help from the Party as a whole...including the Pres., and Sharpton et al... and said <span style="font-weight: bold">what he would do to save the city</span> the results would have been different..</span><span style="color: #33FF33">..hindsight is always 20/20</span>

Mr. Cuomo has discussed candidates who would diversify the ticket, which, given the interest shown, has the potential to be dominated by Italian-American men, and he is said to be intrigued by William C. Thompson Jr., among others, as a candidate for state comptroller. Mr. Thompson, New York City’s comptroller, put up a surprisingly strong challenge to Michael R. Bloomberg in the race for mayor of New York <span style="font-weight: bold">despite being outspent 14 to 1.</span>

What I am intrigued about are the reasons mentioned for NOT voting for Bloomie..

Reasons such as:

* rising land taxes

* an increase in water rates...aaannnd...

* the terror of NYC...<span style="font-weight: bold">paawking tickets</span>
