mi kinda feel it for him; amerika is in a new age and he is the top symbol...he's catching heat from all sides...

it <span style="text-decoration: underline">was</span> a referendum on the WH, but only in so far that the democratic base did not turn out in droves - not because the GOP is beginning to rally because there's no solid evidence for that.

You loose two governorships in two 'blue states' within a year of winning the WH. That doesn't look good; and the WH must take a big chunk of the blame.

President Obama's brain trust floated a raft of excuses on Wednesday in answer to complaints that he didn't lift a finger for vanquished Democrat William Thompson.

&quot;It was a sleeper race. No one thought it was going to be a close race, especially Bloomberg,&quot; a source told the Daily News. A stronger presidential embrace of Thompson might have backfired, the Obama insider contended, by driving more Bloomberg backers to the polls.

&quot;There is an argument to be made that a lot of Bloomberg's voters stayed home because they didn't think it was close,&quot; the source insisted.

Thompson's loss by a mere 4.6points despite being outspent roughly 13 to 1 has left some disappointed Democrats wondering if the party establishment - including Obama - could have done more.

But the source acknowledged that Obama had no desire to take on Bloomberg.

&quot;[Bloomberg's] an ally, so I'm not sure we would have spent the political capital,&quot; the source said.

&quot;Obama didn't even put out a statement endorsing [Thompson]. That tells you how we feel about Bloomberg.&quot;

A Thompson spokesman had no comment yesterday, although top aides have told The News they would have liked to see the commander in chief rally the troops here.

Bloomberg, who ran on both the Republican and Independence Party lines, got a congratulatory phone call from Obama on Tuesday night. He demurred when asked if an Obama effort on Thompson's behalf could have spelled trouble for his campaign.

One supporter of Thompson whogroused publicly about Obama's general absence from the contest- Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-Brooklyn, Queens) - got the sharp end of the stick.

Weiner mused to the Politico.com Web site that maybe one of Obama's trips to stump for New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine, who lost to Republican Chris Christie, might have been better spent helping Thompson.

&quot;Maybe Anthony Weiner should have manned up and run against Michael Bloomberg,&quot; a White House official lashed back.

Weiner, who ended his flirtation with a City Hall run in May,attempted to laugh it all off, saying he didn't blame Obama for Thompson's narrow defeat.

&quot;Look, it was a very modest thing I said - 'Maybe one appearance?' - but I don't have any qualms with him saying that they would have liked me to be the candidate,&quot; he said. &quot;I'm flattered by that.&quot;

Five points?

A week ago Quinnipiac had Bloomberg up 18 points. Yesterday they had him up 12 points.

If the polls were anywhere near right, and the shift in their numbers reflected the rate of Thompson's gain, he should have lost by about 10 points.

What happened?...

Even the stalwart Times admits Bloomberg's &quot;margin was far smaller than expected.&quot; Last night Liz Benjamin looked at the numbers and said they were &quot;not decisive. Not at all,&quot; and noticed NBC, who counsel we had drunkenly accepted earlier, had withdrawn their early victory projection.

Time magazine calls Bloomberg's victory, long portrayed as an impending landslide on the magnitude of his 2005 58-39 crushing of Freddy Ferrer, a &quot;squeaker.&quot;

Did Bloomberg lose a bunch of votes? Our guess is that he never had them to begin with.

On October 22 a Marist poll showed that &quot;likely non-enrolled voters have moved toward Thompson.&quot; For one thing, this was a remarkable shift -- a month earlier Marist had seen the unenrolled breaking 65-31 for Bloomberg. On the 22nd they found them going 48-41 for Thompson.

Is that believeable? We didn't catch this at the time -- and we admit, we got played as bad as everyone else -- because we figured if those &quot;voters&quot; weren't enrolled at the time of the survey, which came after the voter registration deadline, their preference hardly mattered. In hindsight, aside from the question of whether their respondents understood what &quot;enrolled&quot; meant, we wonder if Marist or any other polling organization ever talked to certain kinds of people who were equipped with the franchise but might not respond to phone polls, even if they were &quot;conducted in both English and Spanish.&quot;

A lot of citizens speak Farsi, Urdu, Creole, Mandarin, Russian, etc. A lot of citizens don't take calls from pollsters, or any strangers, whatever their language.

A lot of citizens are invisible, at least to the people who get paid to &quot;reach out&quot; to them, and not always because of the language they speak.

We respect professionals, including polling professionals, but the idea most large organizations have of who we are -- as revealed by the marketing that is thrown at us everywhere we go -- is often woefully inaccurate. This year the pollsters seemed to figure we were just like the people in the Bloomberg ads -- &quot;multicultural&quot; and &quot;diverse&quot; in a TV-friendly way, walking with the Mayor down clean sidewalks, shaking hands with him and optimistically looking toward the future.

But to a shocking extent, they miscalculated -- and so did we.
