Gabourey"s acting is wonderful. Like I said in the other forum, the characters that were cast for the film came from the original book. If all of the cast were light skinned then you'd be still talking crap.

I do personally know of a father that had sex with his daughter who became pregnant. No one even knew the girl was pregnant until she was almost 8 months. So you tell me this isn't real.

There is one teacher who until this day is having sex with his own sister and his cousin. He ended up having sex with a woman who is married and both her and her husband have aids. They are listed in the county where the health department lists persons who are infected. You sit there and think this mess doesn't happen keep dreaming.

Forced to have sex with her father, Denise became pregnant. When the pregnancy was discovered, she refused to have an abortion. Her father, however, found an abortionist who would perform the abortion without her consent. She alone has had to pay the price.
I am a victim of incest; one of the "hard cases" for abortion. I was raped by my father when I was fifteen years old. It was not the first time, nor would it be the last. However, this time, I became pregnant.

One night, I became very sick and my parents took me to the hospital. (I believe now that they knew I was pregnant since they took me to a different hospital than normal.) The emergency room doctor discovered that, along with a very bad case of the flu, I was 19 weeks pregnant.

My father flew into a rage, accusing me of all sorts of things, and demanding I have an abortion. The doctor informed me that I was pregnant and asked me what I wanted. I had seen the "Silent Scream" in high school religion class and knew that abortion was murder. In spite of the pain and guilt I felt, knowing who the father of the baby was, it was far better to have a baby than the alternative - to kill it. I refused to have an abortion.

My father flew into an uncontrollable rage and demanded that I consent to the abortion, or that the doctor do it with or without my permission. The doctor refused because of my wishes. My father demanded that an abortionist be found - regardless of the cost.

Within one hour, this man arrived at the hospital, talked with my parents and decided to do the abortion, without speaking to me. I refused and tried to get off the examining table. He then asked three nurses to hold me while he strapped me to the bed and injected me with a muscle relaxant to keep me from struggling while he prepared to kill my baby. I continued to scream that I didn't want an abortion. He told me, "Shut up and quit that yelling!" Eventually, I was placed under general anesthesia and my child was brutally killed.

I was told that an abortion would solve my problem, when it was never really the problem in the first place.

I was told, "Your parents know what's best," when they obviously were only concerned about their own reputations.

I was told, "You make the right decision," when I was never given a choice. More importantly, where was my baby's choice?

I grieve every day for my daughter. I have struggled to forget the abuse and the abortion. I can do neither. All I think of is, "I should have done more, fought more, struggled more for the life of my child."

My situation may not be common, but I know it's not unique either. The emotions and problems I've had to deal with as a result of my abortion are common. The trauma of the rape and abuse were only intensified by the abortion. The guilt of knowing my baby is dead is something I will have to live with for the rest of my life.

I was violated and betrayed over and over by my father, who God created to love and protect me. I was humiliated, hurt, and yes, violated again by the abortionist.

Why do even pro-lifers talk about making exceptions for abortion in cases of rape and incest as if that is a way to have "compassion" for the mother? Why is this the only "loving" response to the situation? I have talked with pro-lifers who consider my abortion acceptable, under the circumstances. I want to tell people, "If you really want to be compassionate, give this mother the opportunity to choose life for her child. If you really love the mothers who have been victimized, don't let them be exploited again by someone who will make a profit from their dead child -- a memory that will haunt them for the rest of their lives."

The next time you hear of the "hard cases," please remind people that every crisis pregnancy is difficult for the mother. If you believe these cases are hard, you're correct -- they are extremely hard for the mother. But if you choose abortion, it's an impossible situation for the baby. The mom needs love, support and understanding, not the pain of allowing herself to be violated again in order to kill her child. Regardless of the circumstances, regardless of the pain involved, that helpless, innocent child has no voice, no defense, and no chance, unless we offer real love and real compassion to the mother.

My abortion was over five years ago. God is still healing me, but it has been a difficult fight. I hesitated to write to you because, although I'm actively pro-life, very few people know my story. It's still very difficult to share with people, however, I wanted to encourage you in your uncompromising stand for life.

Monster of incest is on the rampage

Incest in the Indian community is a ticking time bomb ready to explode at any time, according to three top child support and anti-abuse groups.

This follows the release by the Advice Desk for the Abused of shocking statistics, showing it had handled 847 incest cases in the Durban, Chatsworth and Verulam areas in the past two years.

"Unfortunately, there has been a phenomenal change of late," said Advice Desk Executive Director, Fatima Bayat. "Cases relating to incest are now high on the agenda. They include child rape, sexual molestation and sodomy within the family structures.

"The perpetrators include close members of the family. Fathers, uncles, brothers and other relatives sexually abusing or raping girls in the home is still not uncommon," said Bayat.

"Human rights organisations and women's rights groups are still
fighting what I call a losing battle.

"We are faced with yet another monster to deal with. Incest has become the norm in certain homes. Siblings, who are in mutual agreement, are indulging in sexual activities," said Bayat.

Absence

"Parents are of the belief that fancy homes and cars, generous amounts of money and unlimited freedom make up for their absence in the child's life. Children are left to their own devices and this is one of the crucial factors that contribute to incest," said Bayat.

The Advice Desk for the Abused has, in the past two years, dealt with 30 075 cases in which women were victims of domestic violence, and 15 485 cases of domestic violence where men were the victims. Of the total 45 560 cases, 847 were reported as incest, said Bayat.

"There are many more families, who might not even be aware it is happening in their homes, or which are quite aware that it is taking place, but are too embarrassed to seek the necessary help," she said.
"If the situation is not dealt with, children will continue with this behaviour," said Bayat.

"Unfortunately, (this behaviour) is very common within the Indian community. It is becoming more common within the Muslim and Hindu communities," said Bayat.

"As a society, we tend to think that this problem does not exist within our homes or communities. We tend to take it for granted that it is a far-fetched idea that does not exist in our homes," said Bayat.

"This has been happening for a very long time. Parents would never know, unless they were faced with the unpleasant experience of walking into the situation," she said. "I can only commend those parents who have taken a stand - who have put aside the embarrassment and stigma they might experience and have approached the relevant organisations for assistance or intervention."

Linda Naidoo, Director of Childline KwaZulu-Natal, confirmed that incest - especially sibling incest - had become a cause for serious concern. Naidoo said this was a far more serious problem than adult incest, because it was hidden.

"There is a clear dividing line between sibling and adult incest. Adult incest is more reported than sibling incest," she said. "Parents are terrified of reporting sibling incest - not only because of the stigma attached, but because they also fear for the future of the siblings concerned. The parents feel they need to protect the child," said Naidoo.

"They believe the child will grow out of it. Even though they know it is inappropriate behaviour that they need to deal with, the only action they take is to discipline the child," said Naidoo.

"Many forces also come into play as far as the girl victim is concerned. The girl child may feel guilty, believing that she may have touched her sibling accidentally, or said something to arouse his feelings," she said. "This leads to all forms of emotional trauma for the girl victim.

"She also requires counselling to help her overcome her emotional problems," she said.

Bobbi Bear Crisis Centre Director Jackie Branfield agreed that incest had become a serious problem that required urgent intervention. She said the centre had operated an HIV/Aids Abuse Prevention Programme throughout schools in KwaZulu-Natal for the past five years.

She said many cases of incest had surfaced through the programme.
"Incest does not know colour, language or culture. It runs across the colour line," she said.

However, she added, when the HIV/Aids prevention programme was taken to Chatsworth schools, the centre had found it was rife in the Indian community.

Branfield said they had come across numerous cases of incest during their visits to this South Durban area.

Trauma

"The programme is conducted in such a way that it allows children who may have been abused, or who know of someone who has been abused, to come forward and talk about their trauma during private sessions.

"We found incest was particularly rife among Muslim and Hindu children," said Branfield.

"However, the worrying factor about this is that these reports only surface a year or two later," she said. "Our concern is of the victims being affected by HIV/Aids. Because it takes such a long time to surface, there is not very much one can do if they are infected."

"The father or brother may be the perpetrator, but we have found that mothers also play an important role in covering up this abuse. Mothers need to be made aware they could also face criminal charges if it is found they knew about the abuse and assisted in covering up these crimes," said Branfield.

Case 1
The family of four - parents and two children, aged 16 and 14 - is not well-off. Both parents' jobs include working, at times, in shifts. Both children are at school.

One week both parents end up working at night. The father, in the vicinity of his home, decides to check on the children. When he walks into the lounge he finds his son and daughter in a compromising position. In desperation he takes both his children to the local police station. They are not able to assist and refer him to the Advice Desk. The matter was referred to the Child Protection Unit.

The children were separated, the girl kept with the family and the boy sent to his uncle.

The family members were sent to professionals for counselling.

· Case 2
The father of the well-respected family was a priest at the local church. He had two sons and two daughters.

The father refused to send his daughters to school, instead insisting on educating them at his office attached to the church.

The two older sons were allowed to go to school, but their father instructed them to have sexual intercourse with the daughter every afternoon.

If they did not do so, he beat them and called them sissies. The father also sexually abused his youngest daughter in the park every day.

The mother did not accept that her husband was capable of such behaviour. Charges were laid, but were withdrawn by the mother.
The children were removed from the parents into foster care.

· Case 3
The advice desk was approached for help by a 14-year-old girl who was adamant she was attracted to her father, whom she described as very handsome and sexy. She claimed to have sexual desires for him.

She was not able to accept that this was unacceptable. She developed a terrible attitude towards her mother, becoming extremely jealous and possessive and resorting to physical abuse.

Her parents could not understand her behaviour. The daughter would take advantage of any conflict between the parents and often insisted on sharing a bed with her dad.

He does not allow her to do so, or encourage her in any way.

She is currently receiving counselling twice a week from a psychologist, as well as seeing a psychiatrist.

This piece is quoted has nothing to do with Gabby's acting skills. The movie is about Precious' life and she is the main character. Here it is, saying she was bad because she is supposedly dark skinned.

The three so called "good" characters are light skinned bi racial.

All of this yapping is based on characters in a book called Push by a Black woman author named Sapphire. None of these people that are yapping have read the book.

Sapphire is known as a performance poet, sometimes called a spoken word artist. She is also a novelist, the author of the critically-acclaimed book Push, her first novel. The book has been adapted to film with the help of talk show host Oprah Winfrey and playwright-gone-Hollywood Tyler Perry as executive producers.

Published in 1996, Push is the story of Claireece "Precious" Jones, an obese black teen who is not only beaten often by her mother, but also sexually and verbally abused by both her parents. Her own father is the father of Precious's two children.

The book is available in hardcover, paperback, audio, and soon will be released in a special movie tie-in edition from Vintage Books USA, part of Random House publishing. The literary world widely discussed this novel in 1996, not only for its disturbing subject matter, but also because Sapphire reportedly received an unusually high advance, $500,000.

Random House offers a guide for readers at its website from which the following text is excerpted:

"Don't nobody want me. Don't nobody need me. I know who I am...ugly black grease to be wipe away, punish, kilt, changed, finded a job for"[p. 33]. This is the voice of Precious Jones, a viciously abused Harlem girl. In 1996, The Village Voice named Push one of the top 25 best books of that year. In addition, it received the Black Caucus of the American Library Association’s First Novelist Award, the Book-of-the-Month Club Stephen Crane Award for First Fiction, and was nominated for an NAACP Image Award.

According to Sapphire's bio at Random House, "As a teenager she lived in South Philadelphia and Los Angeles. She graduated from City College in New York and received an MFA from Brooklyn College. From 1983 to 1993 she lived in Harlem, where she taught reading and writing to teenagers and adults." In a 1996 interview with the author by Mark Marvel, it's said that "it was while conducting literacy classes there (in Harlem) that the idea for ... Push, was born."
In January 2009, the Lionsgate movie Precious was screened at the Sundanace Film Festival where it won three awards. Lee Daniels directed the film, and told Variety that Oprah got behind the film fully, choosing to be an executive producer with Perry. "She connected to it with bells and whistles and is an executive producer with Tyler Perry," Daniels told Liz Smith.

Based on Oprah's May interview with Mo'Nique, who is usually seen in comedic roles, Oprah indicated that she was moved not only by the film's story but also by Mo'Nique's acting skills.

"I saw Mo'Nique's performance in this film and was so blown away," Oprah says. "She is giving the performance of a lifetime." (Oprah.com)
A 1996 New York Times review compares the book Push to another title associated with Winfrey, The Color Purple by Alice Walker.

Precious is scheduled for release this fall, November 6. In addition to Mo'Nique starring in the film, newcomer Gabourey 'Gabby' Sidibe plays the title role. Other cast members include Paula Patton, Mariah Carey, Lenny Kravitz, and Sherri Shepherd.

News sources indicate the movie is entitled Precious and not Push to avoid it being confused with a different 2009 movie, Push starring Dakota Fanning.

How can you challenge anything if you haven't read the book or seen the movie?

Claireece Precious Jones endures unimaginable hardships in her young life. Abused by her mother, raped by her father, she grows up poor, angry, illiterate, fat, unloved and generally unnoticed. So what better way to learn about her than through her own, halting dialect. That is the device deployed in the first novel by poet and singer Sapphire. "Sometimes I wish I was not alive," Precious says. "But I don't know how to die. Ain' no plug to pull out. 'N no matter how bad I feel my heart don't stop beating and my eyes open in the morning." An intense story of adversity and the mechanisms to cope with it.

She is a good character.

just because sapphire is an author does not mean she doesn't have issues; her statement creeps me out:

to me seems like she is seeing herself thru the lens of white people...did the white woman usually stereotype large black women as pitiable characters? why?
almost like she is trying to explain to them that those fat ghetto women can be good people too;
even if their life ends up with no hope & situation is horrible...where is the positivity in this film?

wi waan si some uplifting stories now...fiyah pon hollyweird everytime wid dem biggin up black people as poor ting pickney image inna dem 'acclaimed' films...from 'birth of a nation' right up til now; ('color purple' & 'monster's ball' other atrocities);

we're gonna leave this movie with opposing views & that's all good...oh yea my bad- there is one positive dark-skinned character in the movie; ONE...i guess we should be happy for that

Xosha Roquemore played the Jamaican student, her brother raped her repeatedly. When she finally told their mother, she threw her out on the streets to raise herself. Her character was good so why didn't they mention her.

the people who helped these poor disadvantaged ghetto people were all light-skinned or bi-racial;
why? they were the people who were moral & in authority to help the dark-skinned ghetto characters;
the jamaican girl was ghetto & couldn't read well...in j-a in school they teach english yet the j'can girl was writing in patwa...so no i wasn't particularly happy that the one j'can character was an semi-illiterate ghetto head;

they can make any movie they want, but i just ask for balance; too many movies like this and not enough to show other black stories...seems only these types get the push & ratings;

but i'm just going by hollyweird's track record...they have a lousy one when it comes to their portrayals of certain people

Whatever, I have had people of different races admit to different things as well. Even Mon'nique said that she was approached by a Asian man saying that he saw himself on the screen as an abuser. Sapphire said after the screening in Cannes a 60 year old White woman stood up and said she was Precious. Abuse is in every nationality.

I can't even believe you even saw the movie if you're asking me where is the positivity. Unless you are God, how can you know what Sapphire actually thinks? I saw her in an interview where she quoted the same line, there are "Precious"s all around the world that have been sexually abused in every nationality,as well as every body type. And like I've said earlier you can sit around watching all sorts of violence in movies and accept that crap. Why don't you go out and make a movie if you think you could do better.

Just admit that you didn't see the flipping movie.
