From taking time out for little acts of kindness, such as signing a games console for an auction benefiting Mission Australia , her commitment to helping children has extended to becoming a 2007 Cartier LOVECHARITY Bracelet Ambassador, performing at Madonna’s Raising Malawi /UNICEF fundraiser, and even using her fame to help a mother of two find a bone marrow donor.

What’s more, the sultry singer also finds time to support charities which focus on disaster relief, AIDS and environmental issues.

Rihanna performed ‘Umbrella’ at the DKMS gala at Capitale in NYC in 2007.

for each cheque that ur business manager sends, ur tax relief is doubled , tripled etc ....forgive me , being on the inside of artist management n affixing name to charities if i am not impressed...scheduling alone could not afford intimate , on hands involvement in all dese...an wen u do schedule an on di spot moment, the primary reason has a lot to do wid PR effect n residual positive fallout from said....

a few further points to consider- the issue is not one limited to any certain demographic and so the message is not to be limited by demographics- as far as I am concerned anyways. she has a broad fan base. I don't see young people today tripping over themselves to get at tina turner's body of music or relating to her story. just the way the youth have always gravitated to their thing. everything under the sun has been sung about and done artistically yet art still continues. why female to female male to male, why can not a father impart to his daughter or a boy's mother impart to her son this lesson. and what now if the family is not the story book nuclear set up.

second- if tina or parental messages was so effective, why then are women still being beaten and abused.

Why I think she will make a difference is because any time the hard light of day comes to an issue that is often not in that light, it calls attention, and if people identify with rihanna either through her celebrity exposure or music or what have you, if the facade is cracked and the princess is seen to be just like them, that even she can have to deal with what they are dealing with...well the proof is in the pudding as they say. the woman who nominated her and intro'd her to the stage point blank said their hotline phones LIT UP. So I don't need to believe, or offer opinion, I can trust in the facts of the matter as told by the person in the trenches.

young women are not listening to tina. many don't listen to their parents, or are repeating the cycle of abuse they've learned at home- men and women. who knows why CB's mind was conditioned in such a way as to accept that violence is a solution to emotional problems. so what then about these kids who don't have parental involvement.

also, let me add, the only two artists we ever dealt with who seemed to pick up on the scope of the project we were working on were rootz underground, erup, and an artist name Humble. erup would have donated his performance, but we insist they get paid and contracted so there's A no backing out for a paid gig- a lesson hard learned- and B why shouldn't they make some money for what they are doing, attaching their name and celebrity weight to a cause. And some up and coming hip hop acts. for everyone else who touched our stage it was a business transaction first and foremost. so be it, I don't care per se that is on them.

so yeah, I approach these things with a healthy does of skepticism with one caveat. The artist has a right to make their money just as much as the next one. It's what they do with the money being exchanged between themselves and their fans and what they say and actions they pursue that matters to me. I've also seen the education of an artiste occur. I don't expect an artist to be anything other than about their business, most of them are completely fabricated anyway.

If in the pursuit of their dollars they can step to the plate and make some positive differences, then I feel that is to be applauded. I don't get what you are saying really about adhering to borders nor the scorn for rihanna. Why is Tina's experience more authentic. She's 'benefitted' from that part of her story as well according to your logic.

Artists travel and do things. What's the difference if she does a benefit in Ireland or JA or Sierra Leone. Paul Wall, Raekwon and Tego Calderon went to Sierre Leone on invitation, should they not have gone or should the promoter not have carried them to perform with Sierra Leonion brethren.

I dunno...whatever you want to say about it, these artistes are cultural influencers. If only one person is saved by Rihanna I don't see how all of this is not worth it even if it is just posturing. Think of it this way- the way Rasta used Selassie to give form and shape to their response- it almost doesn't matter what Selassie himself thought that misses the point. Maybe parents should take her crusading (or posturing) as a wakeup call and at this point I feel to invoke the starfish analogy. It mattered and was worth it to the one girl who Rihanna's story touched, who was able to use Rihanna in some way shape or form as a response to what happened to her. Who can assign a price to that. Is it worth Rihanna making a million through the exposure because of this?

Maybe to that one girl, our postings and opinions on this forum are only so much hot gas formed into pixel letters.

the only thing that matters to me is that people get helped who need it and things change, and people can see there is a better way, we don't have to exploit the hell out of each other on account of a system none of us had much to do with putting together but just help perpetuate 'til we wake up. I recognize it is an uphill fight. but you know also as well as I that things can change and come better than before...how I see reality should be, and what I make reality to be for me and mine, and what it is for many others, trust me man I well know there is a big frakking gap and the reality for most is looking far grimmer. even this very day I just rolled coins up and took them to the bank to try and keep a kid in school. probably won't do much and that is the sad [censored] truth. and trust me too the heartbreak sometimes is overwhelming because there is so much to do and so much predatory ish out there. so what you say then, give up the mission and just what? go get my nine to five, make my bills, get that nice retirement, live the music video life, and take nice vacation? you sound like my whole family, my girlfriend- who did give up on me, my friends...but no sah...evanovitch come on now, I know you know your good book. don't you believe in those teachings what Yashua passed on to us? because there is a way to make people do good even if they don't want to or care to up front. you just work the system to the goals you want.

think of it like this- an artist comes out. his whole thing soup to nuts is fabricated, everything is just made to be a gravy train and everyone is in collusion all along the feed pipe, with the end result of making some people tons and tons of money. okay, so why now can't someone come along and using the same techniques, manipulate this for the better good of all. instead of lining some record exec's bank wad, this artist gives over 20% to the schools. Nobody even has to know.

NEW YORK - Rihanna spent more than US$50 000 (BDS$100 000) to fly her family to New York to celebrate her Glamour Award as a thank you for supporting her through tough times.

She flew in mum Monica Fenty, plus her brothers and aunts from Barbados to watch her pick up the Woman Of The Year Award in an emotional ceremony at Carnegie Hall Monday night. Afterward the songbird introduced them to Iman, Serena Williams, Tyra Banks and fashion designer Stella McCartney.

Rihanna said during her tearful acceptance speech: <span style="font-weight: bold">&quot;I really look up to my gran and my mum. They are my two women of the year . . . . Without their unconditional love and guidance, I wouldn't be here.&quot;</span>

The group went on to dinner at South Gate in the Essex House, where one Rihanna relative was spotted helping America's United Nations Ambassador Susan Rice pull down the lining of her gown in the ladies' room.

Missing from the festivities was Ronald Fenty, Rihanna's father. The pop star told Diane Sawyer last week that he'd abused her mother when Rihanna was a child.

followup: Last nite on 20/20 they reported that calls to abuse hotlines exploded after last week's Rihanna interview.
59% general increase and <span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="font-style: italic">72% </span></span>increase in calls from teen girls.

with all due respect to everyone's opinions posted here, the fact is that this gal <span style="font-style: italic">does </span>have actual, measurable influence on young women in today's world.

Regardless of her youth, relative inexpereince, and missteps she made in handling her personal troubles, she has already made a factual &amp; measurable difference. And a <span style="font-weight: bold">huge</span> impact on women beginning to bring this issue out and get help.

and personally i'm with monk on this, i'm a beliver in <span style="font-style: italic">'whatever works'.</span> Whether we like the 'source' or not, the impact is real.
