Should African leaders apologise for slavery?

A human rights organisation in Nigeria has called on traditional African rulers to apologise for the role they played in the slave trade.

The Civil Rights Congress says it is time for African leaders to copy the United States and Britain who have already said they were sorry.

In a letter to the traditional rulers, the Congress said they could not continue to blame the white man, when their own ancestors had helped to raid and kidnap defenceless communities and traded them to the Americans and Europeans.

Shehu Sani is head of the Civil Rights Congress.

For the number of generations black preachers,so called leaders and parents have been apologizing for the wrongs blacks criminals do from time to time, how is it I can't seem to recognize the level of reconciliation you expect?


I mean since these are black people too and if some reconciliation will come by the ignorant African traditional leaders apology, it should also come from those doing it all these decades.

After they get them to apologize, which is the next group of Africans will they demand apology from?

And at Wat what stage will it get you me?

Since so many tend to feel ashamed of the behavior of others.

I suppose we should also apologize for them too.
And what if they decide that instead of apology, it should be violent retaliation?
We have we been so mentally enslaved, that we accept the en-slavers, history to the point where we agree that our own should be made to apologize/suffer instead of th en-slavers.
Ignorance has it's uses.
It is fertile ground to plant division.

When futuire generations read that they actually admitted, and apologized...
The education they directed serve their pupose well.

doc,
it's not as complicated as all that...you can not deny that a rift exists between many africans on both sides of the ocean...
but they should not do it because someone demanded it...they should do it because it's the right thing...
they should acknowledge that in some cases (certainly not all) they helped to sell out their brothers into a brutal system;
it should be made very clear that it was the europeans and euro-americans who were overwhelmingly the driving force and who created the demand for slavery, therefore they are the ones responsible for any reparations, but it can not be ignored that some gravilicous african chiefs went along with them for their own self-interests rather than resist...
no doubt many were threatened with extinction if they didn't aid the europeans, but they must face whatever role, if any, they played in it...and anywhere that it can be proven that this or that african chief played a less than honorable part, then the appropriate party should acknowledge it and confess...
no need for violence- juss cool man;
reconciliation between brothers is what we're dealing with-

europe &amp; euro-america is still the masterminds &amp; villains in this and it is they who owe reparations, not any africans.

Why shouldn't the ganja farmers in Jamaica apologise for sending ganja to America?

Or we should wait until a whole industry has been developed around that fact, and then apologize?.


How many of the present tribal leaders did all this that they are suppose to be justified at apologizing for?

People are too easily distracted.

They don't want to pay, so they throw a red herring and all the hungries are gone after it Forgetting th prize.

That is why King always have to so often reminded the people to keep their eyes on the prize.
A lot of distraction will come.
You know how many times would be in the bath room and hear some white airhead shout at the top of his voice <span style="font-size: 17pt"> Niggaaaa</span>. And you know their greatest shock was when i don't even tense a muscle?/
they became more afraid that before they did. They couldn't even get me to tense a muscle. I was that tough. I would stand with my back toward them and only move after i was done doing my stuff. It is very difficult to take me off what is my mind on.
We can't let fear be our motivation.

It's not the ganja trade that should be of concern, but the cocaine that's coming in on trans-shipment from South America to the US. Ganja to me is like alcohol, cocaine is another thing.

This would be a total distraction from the prize - that it is no African leaders that masterminded the system of slavery, maintaining laws and practices that kept it going for 400 years, and then colonised (raided) the homeland of those same blacks after depleting of human capital.

I think if African rulers stand up now and start publicly apologising, with the media so controlled, it will help to miseducate blacks worldwide to deflect their feelings of injustice towards African leaders - as opposed to the ultimate perpetrators of Slavery.

Apologise for what? What African rulers that are alive today had any part in slave trading? What Europeans that are alive today had anything to do with slave trading?
You debate history to the point of nausea, but ignore the present day enslavement of people in Sudan by Arabs.
Me thinks some people's priorities are misplaced.

no i made it clear in my earlier post that only europe &amp; america would be due for reparations as they are the ones who instigated, orchestrated &amp; profited from the system;
these things can be quantified...
the african confession could be more of an internal thing...like they did in uganda &amp; in some ways rwanda; a cleansing, an atonement of sorts...
NOTHING ABOUT REPARATIONS...
but like i said it should not be due to outside pressure...it should be a heartical thing- not beaurocratic;

all slavery is wrong &amp; should be abolished...
but it doesn't compare in scope &amp; magnitude to the trans-atlantic african slave trade...sudan has had civil war for decades as you may know;
that in itself is an unstable gov't rife for these types of abuses
