Trinidad Mayor Blames Woman for Her Own Violent Death at Carnival

I agree a lot of the costumes are way too skimpy and the jiggling and gyrations are too vulgar but.....this is over the top in terms of criticizing the murdered woman.

A woman who attended Carnival in Port of Spain, Trinidad this week was found dead, and now the city’s mayor is facing heat for publicly stating Asami Nagakiya, like all women attending Carnival, was herself responsible for “ensuring that she is not abused.” Nagakiya, a 30-year-old Japanese performer for a local Soca band in Trinidad, was found dead on Wednesday, still wearing the decorative yellow bikini costume that’s typical of Carnival attendees.
Geoff Adams, the man who discovered Nagakiya’s body, told reporters: “She had a laceration on her elbow and black and blue marks on her waist...It look like a rape/murder to me.” An autopsy report revealed that the victim was strangled, but police are still investigating and have yet to confirm a sexual assault. No arrests have been made.

In the wake of the death, the city’s mayor Raymond Tim Kee is being heavily criticized for his comments about how women’s clothing and behavior at Carnival. At a press conference on Wednesday, citing the rowdiness of the yearly festival, Kee told the local station Loop:

“You know before Carnival I did make a comment about vulgarity and lewdness. The woman has the responsibility to ensure that [she is] not abused. And my argument was you could enjoy Carnival without going through that routine … of prancing and partying. Then why you can’t continue with that and maintain some kind of dignity?”

Kee also referred to the murder as “embarrassing for Carnival,” adding:

“You have to let your imagination roll a bit and figure out was there any evidence of resistance or did alcohol control? Therefore involuntary actions were engaged in, and so on….It’s a matter of, if she was still in her costume – I think that’s what I heard – let your imagination roll.”

Wow even I find that a tad harsh.

Kee’s dense remarks, implying that Nagakiya could’ve prevented her own murder, prompted a petition demanding his resignation. It currently has over 7,800 signatures. One petitioner commented: “Victim shaming is an irresponsible thing for anyone to do, far less a leader in a society. Mayor has shown himself to be both insensitive, preemptive and ignorant. He must go.”

CARIBBEAN: Japanese woman murdered while attending carnival in Trinidad

panese pannist Asami Nagakiya was last night identified as the masquerader found dead at the Queen’s Park Savannah, Port-of-Spain, yesterday.
Homicide detectives were able to confirm her identity last night, having sought the public’s assistance earlier, after her body was found under a tree around 9.30 am.
Nagikiya and some of her friends have made headlines over the years as they traditionally visit T&T to play in the National Panorama competitions, including with former champions Phase II Pan Groove and PCS Nitrogen Silver Stars, and partake of the Carnival festivities.
According to reports, Geoff Adams, of Tamana, was walking through the area when he noticed a homeless man screaming while pointing at a patch of bushes.
“The guy say he see something in the bushes. I say it was a manicou or iguana but when I look I see a bikini bottom,” Adams told reporters in a brief interview after being interrogated by police on the scene.
The grisly discovery was made mere metres away from Queen’s Royal College and the Maraval Road roundabout, as crews from the Community-based Environmental Protection and Enhancement Programme (Cepep) were busy cleaning up rubbish left over from Carnival celebrations.
The area was cordoned off by police for several hours as crime scene investigators combed heaps of discarded food and beverage containers, which surrounded Nagakiya, for evidence. Nagakiya was found lying face down and was subsequently taken to the Forensic Science Centre, St James, where an autopsy will be performed today.

Outrage in Trinidad after mayor blames Carnival killing on dancer’s ‘lewd behavior’

It was Ash Wednesday morning and Trinidad was waking up to a Carnival hangover. Trash from the raucous two-day festival still covered the streets of Port of Spain as daylight crept across the Queen’s Park Savannah. The huge expanse of grass and trees on the edge of the capital was serene compared to the past two days of music and dancing.But then came the screams.
Geoff Adams had just woken up on a park bench and was walking home through the Savannah when he heard the shrieking. A homeless man was pointing at a patch of bushes and screaming, so Adams walked over to see what was going on, he told local paper the Guardian.
“The guy say he see something in the bushes. I say it was a manicou [possum] or iguana,” Adams said. “But when I look I see a bikini bottom.”
Underneath the bright yellow bikini bottom was the body of Asami Nagakiya, a 30-year-old Japanese professional musician. She had come to Trinidad to participate in Carnival, as she had in previous years. Now she was dead, still dressed in her bejeweled masquerade outfit.
“She had a laceration on her elbow and black and blue marks on her waist,” Adams told reporters. “It look like a rape/murder to me.”
Authorities released an autopsy report Thursday stating that Nagakiya had been strangled, according to television station CNC. They have not commented on the suspicion that Nagakiya was sexually assaulted.

Police have questioned a man and woman over the crime but have yet to make any arrests, reported the Guardian.
After two days of joy, the killing came as a shock for locals and the thousands of tourists who flock to the island nation every year for the famously vibrant festival.
“Life is so unfair,” her friend Mariah Rodriguez wrote on Facebook beneath a photo of them posing in their matching Carnival outfits. “This young lady loved our culture and people, and someone took that away from her…you monsters disgust me!”

Outrage over the crime, however, quickly shifted towards the city’s mayor after he suggested that by dressing in a revealing costume and dancing, Nagakiya was to blame for her own killing.

Kee’s cringe-worthy comments kept getting worse, as he tried to link the Japanese musician’s killing to Carnival culture.

At least you have moderated your tone and seems to not be blaming the woman for her own violent death. Except the story still does fit your historic narrative, that a woman wearing Go-Go Outfit and Whineing is devil personified!

I would never say that a woman who wears skimpy outfits and gyrates in a vulgar manner deserves to be murdered. Besides, her outfit wasn't even that skimpy. Just a standard bikini.

The mayor was right to speak out against the skimpy outfits, jiggling and vulgar gyrating but he picked the wrong time to do it. That was insensitive.

Fair enough ...but Trinidad Carnival is known for skimpy outfits and gyrating. He must not be from Trinidad and Tobago?
