A major investigation is progress into a shocking incident in which members of a jury in a murder case allegedly accepted money to pervert the course of justice. Two female jurors including a foreman were taken into custody Monday after they were caught receiving cash in exchange for derailing the trial.
The case involves a man who was being tried for murder in the Clarendon Circuit Court.
RJR News has learnt that the foreman approached the accused man's mother and informed her that for a fee, she could influence other jurors to return a not guilty verdict in the case.
The foreman told the woman to pay her $100,000 in exchange for the verdict.
Our news centre also learned that about 1pm Monday, the defendant's mother and the jury foreman met at a popular eatery in downtown May Pen where the cash drop was to be made.
The mother of the accused reportedly turned up $50,000 and was in the process of handing the money over to the foreman when police swooped down on the pair.
The sting operation to nab the corrupt juror was set up after the cops had got wind of the proposed arrangement.
Further investigations led the police to another female who it is believed assisted the foreman in hatching the plan and she was also arrested by the police.
A source at the May Pen Resident Magistrate's Court told RJR News that following the arrest of the second woman, the remaining jurors were dismissed.
A new trial date has been set and a new juror is to be empanelled.
The two accused women will know their fate next week Thursday when they face the Clarendon Circuit Court.
