By Michelle Malkin • November 20, 2009 12:23 PM
Anthony Watts of Watt’s Up With That? and Stephen McIntrye of Climate Audit broke the story this morning of the hacking break-in at the University of East Anglia’s Climate Research Unit (aka Hadley CRU).
BBC confirms:
The e-mail system of one of the world’s leading climate research units has been breached by hackers.
E-mails reportedly from the University of East Anglia’s Climatic Research Unit (CRU), including personal exchanges, appeared on the internet on Thursday.
A university spokesman confirmed the email system had been hacked and that information was taken and published without permission.
An investigation was underway and the police had been informed, he added.
“We are aware that information from a server used for research information in one area of the university has been made available on public websites,” the spokesman stated.
“Because of the volume of this information we cannot currently confirm that all of this material is genuine.
“This information has been obtained and published without our permission and we took immediate action to remove the server in question from operation.
“We are undertaking a thorough internal investigation and we have involved the police in this enquiry.”
Researchers at CRU, one of the world’s leading research bodies on natural and human-induced climate change, played a key role in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) Fourth Assessment Report, which is considered to be the most authoritative report of its kind.
First things first: The alleged hackers need to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
That said: The crimes revealed in the e-mails promise to be the global warming scandal of the century — and have massive bearing on the climate change legislation being considered by our lawmakers here at home.
Helpful rundowns of all the latest developments at Hot Air, Shout First, Andrew Bolt, and from James Delingpole at the Telegraph, who sums up some of the most damning e-mails:
When you read some of those files – including 1079 emails and 72 documents – you realise just why the boffins at Hadley CRU might have preferred to keep them confidential. As Andrew Bolt puts it, this scandal could well be “the greatest in modern science”. These alleged emails – supposedly exchanged by some of the most prominent scientists pushing AGW theory – suggest:
Conspiracy, collusion in exaggerating warming data, possibly illegal destruction of embarrassing information, organised resistance to disclosure, manipulation of data, private admissions of flaws in their public claims and much more.
One of the alleged emails has a gentle gloat over the death in 2004 of John L Daly (one of the first climate change sceptics, founder of the Still Waiting For Greenhouse site), commenting:
“In an odd way this is cheering news.”
But perhaps the most damaging revelations – the scientific equivalent of the Telegraph’s MPs’ expenses scandal – are those concerning the way Warmist scientists may variously have manipulated or suppressed evidence in order to support their cause.
Here are a few tasters. (So far, we can only refer to them as alleged emails because – though Hadley CRU’s director Phil Jones has confirmed the break-in to Ian Wishart at the Briefing Room – he has yet to fess up to any specific contents.) But if genuine, they suggest dubious practices such as:
Manipulation of evidence:
I’ve just completed Mike’s Nature trick of adding in the real temps to each series for the last 20 years (ie from 1981 onwards) amd from 1961 for Keith’s to hide the decline.
Private doubts about whether the world really is heating up:
The fact is that we can’t account for the lack of warming at the moment and it is a travesty that we can’t. The CERES data published in the August BAMS 09 supplement on 2008 shows there should be even more warming: but the data are surely wrong. Our observing system is inadequate.
Suppression of evidence:
Can you delete any emails you may have had with Keith re AR4?
Keith will do likewise. He’s not in at the moment – minor family crisis.
Can you also email Gene and get him to do the same? I don’t have his new email address.
We will be getting Caspar to do likewise.
Fantasies of violence against prominent Climate Sceptic scientists:
Next
time I see Pat Michaels at a scientific meeting, I’ll be tempted to beat
the crap out of him. Very tempted.
Attempts to disguise the inconvenient truth of the Medieval Warm Period (MWP):
……Phil and I have recently submitted a paper using about a dozen NH records that fit this category, and many of which are available nearly 2K back–I think that trying to adopt a timeframe of 2K, rather than the usual 1K, addresses a good earlier point that Peck made w/ regard to the memo, that it would be nice to try to “contain” the putative “MWP”, even if we don’t yet have a hemispheric mean reconstruction available that far back….
And, perhaps most reprehensibly, a long series of communications discussing how best to squeeze dissenting scientists out of the peer review process. How, in other words, to create a scientific climate in which anyone who disagrees with AGW can be written off as a crank, whose views do not have a scrap of authority…
The Chicago Way is the Global Warming Mob Way.
Stay tuned.

I do not like hackers and other people who abuse computer skills to damage others and their personal property (virus makers, etc.) and think they should be found and prosecuted fully. That being said, it seems that one (or more) of these individuals has, for once, used their talents to a good end. They are exposing the fraud for what it is.
I imagine that the damage control spin will be that a hack took place but all the data that is being shown on the internet is false.
One can only hope that a “real” team of lawyers get together and subpoena the servers and obtain all the data to verify the validity of it during the full investigation. Then make it public record. Won’t that be quite the kettle of fish?

Dear XXXX,
This is a little disappointing. We decided to submit our paper to IJoC
in order to correct serious scientific errors in the Douglass et al.
IJoC paper. We believe that there is some urgency here. Extraordinary
claims are being made regarding the scientific value of the Douglass et
al. paper, in part by co-authors of that paper. One co-author (S. Fred
Singer) has used the findings of Douglass et al. to buttress his
argument that “Nature not CO2, rules the climate”. The longer such
erroneous claims are made without any form of scientific rebuttal, the
more harm is caused.
In our communications with Dr. xxxxx, we were informed that the review
process would be handled as expeditiously as possible. Had I known that
it would take nearly two months until we received a complete set of
review comments, I would not have submitted our paper to IJoC.
With best regards,
xxx xxxxx

NOAA want to give us more money for the El Nino work with IGCN.
How much do we have left from the last budget? I reckon most has been spent but we need to show some left to cover the costs of the trip Roger didn’t make and also the fees/equipment/computer money we haven’t spent otherwise NOAA will be suspicious.
Politically this money may have to go through Simon’s institute but there overhead rate is high so maybe not!
Best wishes
Mick
Knowing a bit about government money, I understand this to mean …they didn’t keep their funds segregated, and are fudging numbers. Mick is saying that their expenditure reporting can’t show a zero balance because they are supposed to have money left over. They probably need the add on contract (the aforementioned money NOAA wants to give them) so that they can use it to complete their original contract.

Please… so he just going to attempt to play dumb like a 5 year old that got cought with his hand in the cookie jar.
Son… is that a cookie in your hand?
I don’t knoooow…..
Weak. But for me, it confirms these are real emails and they did fabricate their data to fit an agenda.
I can’t wait to hear the leftists communists in our Congress try to blow this off.

Maybe the servers were not hacked at all but a scientist that works there may have had it and faked a hacking to expose the fraud by his fellow scientists.
Just a thought.
The billions that have been wasted on this hoax is just horrendous. I hope that all involved will be prosecuted for falsifying data and fired from research institutions they work for like Dr James Hansen the head of NASA climate research.
He has been caught twice releasing phony temperature data but he still works at NASA despite being caught.
The bottom line is man made Global Warming is the biggest hoax in history. Here is an excerpt from the Hansen article:
“Foisted upon the public by means of giant multi-million dollar PR campaigns and brainwashing mandates that have worked themselves into every sector of society, including education, movies, television the arts and culture, all the attention and funding is being lavished upon a manufactured hoax, peddled with the aid of phony data, as governments prepare to suck what’s left out of the middle class and poor with carbon taxes that do nothing to help the environment, while all the real environmental problems are left in the shadows.”

Not only is it a multitrillion-dollar industry, and not only do these scum scare-scientists comprise a whole giant demographic, so big that whole industries have formed to cater to their princely lifestyles, but they have redefined and extreme-ized the word “ENTRENCHED”.
These so-called “scientists”, in every field and -ology in the dictionary of -ologies, some even made up out of whole cloth and made to appear “legitimate science”, and their departments and their groups and their think-tanks are inextricably and impossibly knotted together with HUNDREDS of intergovernmental agencies worldwide, HUNDREDS of U.N. programs, a veritable alphabet-soup of agencies and programs and councils.
Add to that the personal bedfellow backscratching with U.S. congressmen and senators and the incestuous relationship they all share with “Green” industry and their willing and also globe-trotting, resort-staying, Conde-Naste-Traveller-lifestyle-having propagandists in the media from Hollywood to TV-land.
And they ALL think they’re morally superior to you, Middle America. While stealing your money and living like kings.
HELL ISN’T GONNA BE A LONELY PLACE.

I don’t think “whistle blower” laws convey immunity from prosecution for illegally accessing protected computer networks. Still, I am grateful to whomever posted the material.
Are there FOIA laws in the UK? Can people in the UK now file under such laws to review similar correspondence from the universities implicated in this behavior? Is this the proverbial “crack in the ice” to the scam of “global warming?”
Oddly enough, Pravda has been publishing articles from Russian climatologists predicting the “coming ice age” for years! I wonder if there is any connection between Pravda and the Russian ftp server where this showed up?

That line right there will tell you exactly how they intend to cover this up. They will claim that in order to “forward their own agenda” the hackers “inserted falsified material” into the actual e-mails they obtained, in order to make it look like it was genuine information.

I disagree. Whoever did this should be hailed as a hero for providing definite proof of one of the greatest crimes against humanity in modern history. The global warming hoax is nothing less than an attempt to enslave all of mankind in a world authoritarian regime that is attempting to stop all human progress and keep nearly everyone on earth impoverished and living on a bare subsistence level.

There are many ignorant, and some stupid, people who still insist we’re all doomed, unless we hand over all our liberties and freedom to the government, who are delighted at the prospect. Throughout history, governments have “worked to protect its citizens” by suppressing them, in the interest of “their safety”. We had many periods of “global warming”; the last was 1000 AD. Notice that the polar bears are still around. Then we went into a “mini ice-age”. During the global warming of 1000 AD, when mankind was “doomed”, agriculture thrived, ending famines. Exploration was easier, and, yes, Greenland was named that, because the coast was green and farmable, for a short period. Wine grapes were grown in Northern England. If you don’t believe that, check the street names in many towns there, that are still named after the vineyards. Why people want to give up every freedom of their lives to greedy and egotistical politicans, is beyond me; unless they are ignorant of history or think they will be exempt when the government agents come knocking.

Global warming is from the success the whackadoo religion enjoyed in lying about the spotted owl, except on steroids.
Environmentalists were finally forced to admit they lied, that is after forest product companies didn’t exist in California and nearly gone in other states.
Perpetrating lies about global warming?
Its stock in trade, perhaps some accountability (jail time) will sharpen liars moral heading who treat the public like Jimmie Baker did.
Time to retire from carbon credit stock.
To bad the great lord god Al wasn’t in those emails.
The Sad Case of the Spotted Owl
by Tom DeWeese (June 20, 2007)
Environmentalists are quick to lecture the rest of us about the ways of nature. Don’t clean the dead trees off the forest floor, it’s natural. Cattle and horses on the range aren’t native, so let the grizzles and wolves devour them, it’s natural. Man isn’t part of the ecology, lock him out of vast areas of land, it’s natural. It’s interesting to note how the “natural” argument only applies when it is used to impose the radical environmental agenda. Case in point, the Northern Spotted Owl.
Spotted owls, we were told a decade ago, were disappearing because big bad timber companies were cutting down “old growth” forests. So the environmental movement rushed to the forests, hugged the trees and issued news releases to decry the evils of the logging industry. Save the owl. Save the trees. Kill the timber industry.

That is a very astute observation. Could we be biting down on a tasty morsel, only to find it embedded with a hook, which someone is about to set?
As has been pointed out, the ’scientists’ in the emails only need claim they’re lies and most media outlets will leave them alone, then blame the right for manufacturing the debacle. If you are correct, however, the AGW alarmists may be about to score a massive victory. They could very well have planned this themselves.
