sister cane me one time...i think it was three lick in mi hand miggle.

But not all kids got off that lightly. The boys tended to have a harder time of it, and it was the older teacher (that was preparing us for common entrance exam) that tended to hit first and ask questions after.


Regarding spanking in the USA, I didn't realize that it was still allowed until some months ago that i read an article about how a school in ___(a southern state, can't remember which one, right now) was doing so much better, since they started spanking again. Parents had to "opt in" , if they wanted to give the school admin the option to spank their kids.

I found out that although allowed in my state, the school board in my county has banned the practice.

Grade 5 - This was mi first male teacher and mostly di boys got beaten from him thick lead strap weh him cawl "Pelorus Jack"...but him use to threaten we nuff wid ie doah.

In high school we never get beaten but one particular nun would have we tear off leaf off a di palm tree and she use to weave it in a strap an walk tru di aisles in between the desk and swish it wen smaddy a sleep or dem tings pan di floor or dem nah pay attention...di same nun wuddan mek we kneel dung all day inna class...

passed the memory gems we had to learn but never really discussed.

Maybe what might have helped eased generations of regret at the hands of teachers <span style="font-style: italic">who themselves had limited access to workable social skills </span>would have been the promotion of the well-known adage:

It's nice to be smart but it's just as important to be nice!

So what do we now face? Many systems, including the Jamaican model, which have focused on <span style="font-style: italic">the academics</span> and simply left <span style="font-style: italic">the social</span> to fend for itself.



Cheer up; it's been sad for you, in part, but you can still continue the healing process by giving all you can to your children and others while forgiving those who hurt you.

The popular belief is that social skills should not be a responsibility of the education process.

They Should only train children to supply labour for commerce.

They Have been well trained to accept policies that are responsible to maintain the degradation of the human race.

I think it is illegal to administer corporal punishment to kids here in Canadian Schools, never got any licks in school.

All that abuse you guys suffer in school and you still able to function. I thought I had it bad from my granmere when I was a kid. She used to let me have it with a wooden spoon on my a*zz she never hit me anywhere else. Strange though, no one else was allowed to spank me not even my Mom she made that clear. Her words were &quot;I have custody of her&quot; I think if any teacher had hit me in school my granmere would prolly demolish the entire block and skin the teach alive.

Also, until the day she died she never found out that after each licks what I used to do to her car I was mad as hell after each licks. I remember when I was sixteen she came with the wooder spoon to give me a licking, I guess temporary insanity took over because I wrestled her for that spoon and proceeded to rain some licks pon her...lawd after I was finished I was so ashamed She never hit me again and she never spoke to me for an entire week even though I apologized. A mean am sixteen and you still want to rain licks on me, my granpere never touched me and would hush me after I got licks, when I was older he would hide and give me money after a I got a licking.

I once heard her telling her friend that she licking the black outta me blastid eediat... I dont think she ever forgave my Mom for marrying a black man,anyway I still have a lot to be thankful to her for. she is dead but she made sure I am financially independent albeit with a clause in dey

Don't forget that during the old days teachers spanked children with the approval of their parents and often times if you get spanked at school your parents would spank you again when you get home. All of this beating of children is a direct throw back to slavery parents and some teachers did not know any better. Some of these teachers did not know how to discipline although we had teachers who would send us into the corner to stand on 1 foot and hold our ear with your hand and also to write lines &quot;I will not do this or this 500 times&quot;. I remembered getting a beating in primary school because I questioned the teacher on something about geography (as a matter of fact I told her she was wrong). She asked me to hold out my hands and I refused so she hit me across my back until my back bled. I ran home to my mother who got dressed in her sunday best and took me back to school. She went to the headmaster and lifted up my dress showed him the welts and blood on my back and she then went to the teacher Ms. Welch and 'tore up her behind' and left her naked. I never got a spanking again in school and neither did any of my younger siblings. I recently found a letter (in my father possessions) that I wrote to him in Englnad about this incident. I told him that this 'come from yonder' teacher beat me until my dress was bloddy and that my mother wrote the Minister of Education and had the teacher removed from the school - this letter was dated over 50 years ago. As old I am I will never forget this teacher.

when i was in J4 (so that is about age 9 ) i used to go DC (decarteret College) we had this indian teacher (miss braganza - never forget her she use to wear sari) she used to be wicked....one day a week the boarders had to write letter (I was aday boy so we had to jus read during this time) there was this use who wanted to go tot he bathroom and she tell him to finish his letter...so him bring the letter to show her and it was poorly done she jus draw a text book a box hm cross the side of his head ..the ute [censored] him self right there in front of the class

Mrs. Ahmidis said that such teachers are <span style="font-weight: bold">NOT</span> exhibiting social skills, a much needed part of education to help us all get through this life.

These skills are sadly lacking and have been sadly lacking for years now...but thank goodness, it does <span style="text-decoration: underline">not</span> apply to all teachers and only teachers.

Doc there are many things I dont agree with you on...

Here we have some common ground... Social skills cannot be taught at the swing of a strap...

note I beleive that corpral punishment is wrong.. But waht Jamaican teachers at primary schools did was not displine it was child abuse....

There is another philopshy of corpral punishment... That was carried out at MUNRO it was a gradation of punishment and a limitation of how the corporal was carried out.. Even that was abused.. Ask RichD.. But the un regulated cruelty was more akin to a Nazi concentration camp than a school..


The fact that techers saw and still see the CEE and GSAT as a pass/ fail scario showed their ignorance of the system that they are in.. That it was and still is a methodology of selections to get out the best of the best. Or select those more likely to succed. It takes an exceptional child from a poor rural background without the support of parents who have been to the system to succed...Note it is those children who parents had been to the so called high schools more likely to succedd than those children without parent or brother who are or had been through the high schools. The system is scewered towards the middle classes urban centers..

Teachers should be apologising to students who dont get the oppertunity no placing the onus on the children. They then took the credit for children performance at gatways as a result of their beatings.. Hell.. that they had this attitude should preclude them from being teachers..

There is a discpline problem in Jamaican schools now and there is a ground swell of people / teachers who harp back to when they could hurt children in an unregualted fashion....

I have been fortunate in my work experiences... I get to go to places where I am a manager/ consultant . The skills that I need is fundamentally the ability to present ideas, make descions, analyse the information throug a prisim of skills, experience, build concessions/ compromises that at times can be in conflict, present information that is fundamentally against the natural instint of P&amp;L trackers, stand by those descions see the needs of the project not simply comply with a dominant alpha type.....

Cowing children with straps does not produce that skill set.. It stymies confidence.. it makes one not what to put your head above the parapet.. produces a vertical hireachial structure, making deferment to authortiy the standard operating procedure.. I know I had to relearn and re assesment my life each step of the way.. It took years of warfare to replace my humanity...

I worked alot in West Africa where similar methods of teaching in Jamaica of strap and rote are in place and watched smarter people than me avoid taking responsibilty, they would rather let the status quo remain than make a descion to change it save money, save the enviroment and ultimately lives. ... I saw the same thing in islamic countries with its over emphersis on deferement to the teacher and rote learning.. China the same.. The Chinese are now talking about upgrading their education system to refocus on inovation not on rote.... I was in Centrak and Eastern Europe in the 90's when communism fell apart and watched genius who defered to the central planning systems not be able to function... <span style="font-weight: bold">And at the core of these is the same thing that plagues Jamaican early education..learning by ROTE.</span> <span style="color: #FF0000">management by fear in order to cover inadequesies</span>, .. deferment to authortiy.. The person in higher postion is always right....

I compare my education to the confidence that my daughter has at 8.. I had to relearn that in my late teens... in the mud of a battlefeilds.. There are things on her education that are more realistic, presentation skills, confidence in her self, knowing she can make a mistake without being hurt, presenting her ideas, her opnions, take her projects to completion.. analysis of ideas .. These are the skill sets that are needed will dominate the future.. when information is freely available at the touch of a button. The rote learning and cruety has no place in the 20th centuary.. much less the 21st..

You can force children to memorise by rote but not innovate... We dont need rote, we need innovation...

Wahalla ...when i was in 6th form ..my borther and I went home unauthorized one WE..when wi come back wi get drape by roper..we get suspended for 3 days..along wid dat come a caning ..so i sey suppose i dont take the caning ..him sey well you wont be comming back to this school so mi jus haffi ben an tek it.
