What are the rules in Jamaica ? I hear they are banned somewhat or at least not as easy to own as here. If they are banned when did this all happen - when you became independent or did the Brits do it ?

What are your thoughts on this law ? </div></div>
Of course the British had strict control of firearms ,how else would a colonial power have full control over the masses. When Jamaica gained "independence" (note queen is still head of state)the new rulers still maintained strict control over the ownership of firearms,a control based on race and or class.

The subject is a bit taboo on here, because it involves race. Most Jamaicans have been conditioned to pretend that Jamaican society did not evolved out of slavery and racial prejudice,Hence the motto out of many one .A lot of Jamaicans will admit that Jamaica is a classicist society, what they will omit consciously or subconsciously is that in Jamaica class is largely based on race, whites and near whites at the top all other races in between and blacks at the bottom.
Jamaica is no different from South Africa ,where blacks have achieved political power ,but not economic power or social status. There is alway a exception to the rule,Marcus Garvey called these exceptions "black whites".
Bottom line is ,the amount of Resistance you will encounter when you try to obtain a legal firearm, will largely depend on your race/ class.
That sucks I thought everybody got along on the island between colors. Maybe a diff pic is painted cause I stay in the tourist areas.
I guess the qoute "People in societies without guns are Slaves", (or something to that effect), rings at least somewhat true there. Also "Only outlaws will have guns when guns are outlawed".
England tried that crap 239 years ago with another country. Didn't work out too well for dem.

Is there any push to get this changed ? </div></div>
For the most part the races do get along, beneath the surface is a whole other world with invisible boundaries.
There are a few brave senators who want to change the status quo. Here is one such person speaking in our local news paper. BTW, IT is difficult for a outsider to grasp the intricacies of Jamaican society.
NEWSMAKER - Prudence Kidd-Deans 'shoots' from the hip
published: Tuesday | April 4, 2006
Howard Campbell, Gleaner Writer
KIDD-DEANS
SENATOR PRUDENCE Kidd-Deans chuckled as she read a headline, 'Pruddie a.k.a. Billy The Kid comes out gunning' in last Friday's Financial Gleaner.
The column by Raymond Forrest commented on her recent call for the removal of red tape to allow average Jamaicans to obtain a gun licence.
Mrs. Kidd-Deans, 53, has felt a lot of heat since she made the call on March 18 during the Senate's State of the Nation debate. She said it was necessary as rampant criminality continues to claim hundreds of lives in this country.
"<span style="color: #FF0000">I recommend that every level of bureaucracy be removed to facilitate the application of every law-abiding Jamaican who has applied and who fits the criteria to be granted a firearm licence expeditiously, that such a person can become a front-line soldier in his or her own defence," said Mrs. Kidd-Deans.</span>
SUPPORT, CRITICISMS
Police Commissioner, Lucius Thomas, supported her notion that it is the right for law-abiding citizens to bear arms once they go through appropriate channels.
Former Police Commissioner, Colonel Trevor MacMillan, backed Mrs. Kidd-Deans' statement. But it has been <span style="color: #FF0000">criticised by persons including Mr. Forrest and Andrew Chin, acting president of the Jamaica Rifle Association.</span>(<span style="font-weight: bold">NOTE,THOSE WITH GUNS ARE AGAINST THE IDEA OF AVERAGE JAMAICANS OWNING GUNS)</span>
Her speech caused as big an uproar as the 2003 recommendation by South Central St. Catherine Member of Parliament Sharon Hay-Webster for women with too many children to be sterilised.
Like Mrs. Hay-Webster, Mrs. Kidd-Deans is not backing down from her sensational proposal.
"Absolutely not!" she exclaimed from the porch of her home in Richmond Park, St. Andrew. "What I have noticed is that there is the same response from private sector people, and I don't mean just business people," she added. "But their view is not shared by the people on the ground."
To reinforce her point, Mrs. Kidd-Deans said she was confident that 75 per cent of Jamaican legislators own a gun. She, however, is not one of them.
"I don't even like guns, but I am a practical person. I would want a gun if the necessity arrives to protect myself and my family," she argued. "I am not saying to arm the citizenry, I am saying law-abiding citizens."
<span style="font-size: 17pt">According to Mrs. Kidd-Deans, over 4,000 persons applied for a gun licence in 2005. A great majority, she said, was turned down.</span>
In February, Government announced that the Independent Central Firearm Licensing Authority would replace the Jamaica Constabulary Force as the issuers of firearms. That six-member body, headed by former Jamaica Defence Force chief of staff, Major General John Simmonds, began functioning April 1.
The March 18 address was Mrs. Kidd-Deans' maiden speech to the Senate. She was sworn-in July 2004, weeks after she was appointed to represent the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) as a senator by then party leader and her political mentor, Edwad Seaga.
That year, she expressed an interest in running for JLP general secretary but withdrew from the race.
STRONG ROOTS
Mrs. Kidd-Deans' roots in the JLP are strong. Her father, educator Daniel Warren Kidd, was at the Ward Theatre when the party was launched in 1941 and later acted as a campaign manager for future Prime Minister Hugh Shearer.
He is probably best known as the founder of Warren Hall High School where Prudence, the seventh of his 14 children, once taught. Mr. Kidd, now 95 years old, lives with her.
Senator Kidd-Deans, a divorcee, is the mother of four daughters.
the majority blacks are well conditioned to see legal firearms availability as a danger similar to how in the earlier history of post slavery, they were taught that a black that could read was a danger to the whole society.
Lots of black and those who assist them were killed and put in jails for life.
even the name of the local vulcher was named after a baptist minister Reverend john Crow.
He use to teach black s to read too.
The Jamaica that was successful in organizing the Haitian independence was called by the Haitians BOOKMAN, he had to seek asylum in Haiti because there was a reward for his head, because he could read.
Sam Sharp who The Square was name for in Montego Bay was murdered because he was teaching the blacks to read.
Of Course they have a different story to suit their strategy. What were we discussing again??
Oh legal fire arms availability to the majority.
They have been brainwashed into believe that the removal of human rights and well armed police and all the relevant acts that goes wit it is capable of producing a peaceful civilized society.
I want to hear how they would do it, but they believe in magic.
In Jamaica only the oUt laws and those who support them are allowed legal guns. then the other criminals have the illegal guns, that they use to commit at least 1,600 murders per year. While the brainwashed and the brown-nose support the continued aiding of the criminals to carry out these murders. They do so by maintaining laws that make it impossible for the majority of qualified blacks from owning legal firearms. They do so to maintain the status Quo in which the black majority is held at the mercy of the whites and their supporters, while they utilize the produce of the country to enrich their colonial masters. <div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: J RockTodd</div><div class="ubbcode-body">That sucks I thought everybody got along on the island between colors. <span style="font-weight: bold">"Get up -Stand Up". </span>
Those murders will just keep going up as long as the bad guys don't think the good citizens can shoot back.Heck, even in the desert countries almost everyone gets one "AK" per household.
If the current gov tries to pull that stuff in the states (like the rumors insist), you will probably be watching one (you know what) of a civil war on TV cause we ain't giving up crap.
Good luck Jamaica people I hope this changes for the good for your country soon. You all need a "2nd Amendment".
In the Uk there is NO gun ownership, the police doesnt carry guns except for a special gun unit which is only active where it is suspected a gun may be used....and surprise surprise,...the bad guys arent going around shooting down innocent citizens.
It is a country where subjects serve an unelected monarchy.
Monarchy's by their nature cannot allow the right to anything including legal firearms. Whatever they get are considered privileges, that are allowed at the pleasure of the monarch. They don't even have a constitution. The monarchy is the supreme ruler. <div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: Natral</div><div class="ubbcode-body">In the Uk there is NO gun ownership, the police doesnt carry guns except for a special gun unit which is only active where it is suspected a gun may be used....and surprise surprise,...the bad guys arent going around shooting down innocent citizens.

What are your thoughts on this law ? </div></div> the law allows for any citizen to get a license for a gun once some simple criteria are met - around proof of proficiency in use and storage paying of fees etc. - the problem is in the administration of the law where ot depends on who you know and who knows you and your ability to financially influence the authority granting the license.
When its hot in the jungle of peace I go swimming in the ocean of love.....
