there are also some really great african roots reggae artists;

there is a melding of the mind, body n soul that is ALLL Jamaican wen it comes to the music...it can be DUPLICATED but neva replicated in the sense that a Jamaican , whose muse is music , can do it


emancipate ur mind an u will understand the nuances that reggae IS n WILL ALWAYS be intrinsically an echo of the Jamaican heartbeat...to be sought after but never achieved...

sorry, having followed n been part of its evolution, being amongst many who r now hailed as the GODFADDAS of the music, i have a diffrant view n know dat many do a good job but will neva achieve the fullness that is the music


the days of artists hangin out n creating beats from dem pain, joy, hunger etc, dat is the heart of the music dat oddas imitate n build on...bwoy mi no even tink mi can explain whe mi mean...but there is Reggae n then there is REGGAE...not to detract from the admirers but star, u haffi feel a certain inner, birthright given feeling fi connect wid di spirit of those who gawn awn pon di Zion Train...

it's kind of like the beef that created the whole east-coast/ west-coast feud in hip-hop in the early &amp; mid 90's...
since hip-hop originated in new york, many east coasters did not accept hip-hop music from the west coast as 'authentic'...

now the south ruling things while they fought it out...now new york hip-hop is barely relevant;

j-a is the mecca &amp; birthplace of reggae yes, but if they don't keep stepping up the game...well hey- jazz &amp; rock was also a black music new york once ruled supreme in hip-hop &amp; to me is still the true root...but they can't deny that other regions are now outselling them...whatever that means

it is not a lack of stepping up the game as it is the lure of money needed to maintain any game


if we had realised the power of the music as we now do , hence the race to regain intellectual property rights of all things Jamaican, we would be incharge of the music and its inroad...aka rap, ,movie soundtracks, adveritising bckgrnd etc

let me see if i can explain in written words...

the music was never seen for waat it has become...hence, the one an one artist had to look to di money fi survive in the midst of vipers...even the producters , the vipers, of early days had no insight or planning fi wat di music has become

the music was huge in Europe n Africa before it gained inroad in the US..unfortunately the organisation of the music as a bizniz has never been done an wen done, has been wid advantage to a few at the expense of the many....

the US market fi some reason has always been the sought after market...unfortunately wid di large buying power and the ability to track sales, u ha the flip side of payola and lack of ethical accounting, marketing etc

then u have the idea that u have to change the music to some ideal that those who dont understand it , feel it needs to be,to be able to market it...dat is sooo wrong..Reggae in its original form wid all its evolution spoke to people...dat is wat people want

but we dont put di investment in it to mek it...bwoy JY, mi ha so much mi trying to seh but cannot find di words to mek u see...we have lost the music but still wan the dollas...dere fore we do any an every ting to seize a dolla at the expense of the music

in early 80's..ima say 1981, the dad Denroy Morgan made a song that sound like disco...&quot;I'd do anyting for you&quot;-- very popular tune.

but i would like to say the poster is crazy. Reggae born from JA...nuff said.

plenty concious artist like Richie Spice, Sizzla, Jah Cure,....
lets not get started on the old tunes that still hot no matter what. Reggae outside of JA just dont sound right.

reggae is not really about the accent- unless we want to completely bar non-jamaicans from attempting reggae, which is ridiculous in itself when you consider that american jazz &amp; r&amp;b greatly influenced the early development of our music...it is better when they use their own slang than try to use the jamaican patwa...unless of course they have perfected the j'can patwa- like rayvon or baja jedd or natural black or collie budz &amp; people like that- they have made 'authentic' dancehall hit tunes;
even someone who didn't perfect the patwa dialect on record still had massive hits in jamaica, like snow &quot;anything for you&quot; with buju, beenie &amp; guests;
jamaica is still the root of reggae but we are way behind if we don't realize that styles are adapted all over the world &amp; evolved to their own sounds &amp; experiences...

k'naan the somali is now a huge artist although sometimes rapping in his native somali tongue...no one group can hold on to any particular art form indefinitely...reggaeton proved that...
we are still ethnocentric as jamaicans and rightly deserve credit for pioneering many musical trends &amp; genres, but the rest of the world is gonna do their thing too;
imitation is the highest form of flattery

i can feel you though;

because right now in hip-hop it's all about the south in the u.s.; as an east-coast head, i feel that the southern artists for the most part don't carry the 'true' feel of hip-hop as it originated from new york...

yet the south has been running the game for a while now overall and their sound dominates...so obviously most of america disagrees with me;
i think lil wayne (from the south) is OK but to america he is up there are possibly the best in the game;
one man's inauthentic is another man's cash cow...

look pon di one MATISYAHU...
according to billboard he currently has the number one reggae album in the land;
to me he's average at best...but he has a large following obviously
