At least one of the young girls reported missing under the Ananda Alert system in St Catherine, has been working as a prostitute in Port Henderson.

Business operators in Port Henderson say since the police began cracking down on prostitution in Port Henderson, the girl has not been visiting the strip as often.

They say she continues to visit the location at least twice a week.

It’s also believed that the girl is often joined by her friends who also engage in prostitution.

Up to September this year, 1,206 children were reported missing, with 676 confirmed as returning home, three killed, and more than 500 still unaccounted for.

Yesterday, The Gleaner informed the Children’s Registry of its findings.

While not willing to comment on the specific case, Betty Ann Blaine, convenor of children’s advocacy group Hear the Children’s Cry, said she was concerned about the number of young girls engaging in the sex trade.

Only recently, an early-morning operation by the police resulted in the arrest of 72 people in Port Henderson, many of them women believed to be prostitutes.

AT LEAST one, and maybe more, of the young girls reported missing under the Ananda Alert system are in St Catherine, working as prostitutes on the Port Henderson strip, better known as 'Back Road'.

Up to September this year, 1,206 children had been reported missing, with 676 confirmed as returning home, three killed, and more than 500 still unaccounted for.

However, The Gleaner has confirmed that, of those un-accounted for, at least one is selling her body on Back Road, and business operators and other prostitutes in the area believe she is periodically joined by friends of the same age.

"We see her over here and we lick out pon her, so she have to leave," one of the prostitutes told The Gleaner yesterday, as she lounged outside a premises on Port Henderson Road.

"She gone and live in a community in west Kingston," the prostitute added, in reference to the 15-year-old the police reported missing with an Ananda Alert more than three months ago.

However, a business operator in the area said the girl, whose name is being withheld, still visits the strip to "conduct business".

"Since the police start dem crackdown on the strip, she not here so much, but she still comes on Friday and Saturday night," the business operator said.

"She live with one of the prostitute dem in Denham Town and we see her picture pon TV," added the business operator.

She was supported by another business operator, who said the teenage girls, more and more, were becoming a feature of the strip, which is known for its seafood and guest houses, as much as for the prostitutes who frequent the area.

"Sometimes, when I see the young girls dem and what dem doing to their bodies, me stomach sick," the business owner said.

More than 200 prostitutes offering several sexual favours are said to frequent Port Henderson Road.

While not willing to comment on the specific case, Betty Ann Blaine, convenor of children's advocacy group Hear the Children's Cry, said she was concerned generally about the number of young girls engaging in the sex trade, whether through working in massage parlours, as prostitutes, or in bars.

"We do have a problem of young girls - and this is not anything new to Jamaica - getting into the sex trade. That's a problem that has existed for a long time," Blaine said.

She said cases would have to be monitored by law-enforcement and citizens themselves.

"If you see a child in a place that is inappropriate, then somebody ought to alert law enforcement because at least some questions need to be asked and perhaps investigations done," she said.

The Keith Hinds-led Portmore Municipal Council and the Cannock Chase Council out of England, which were twinned in 2004, have announced plans to address the issue with a major clean-up programme.

Hinds has declared that the time has come for Back Road to become a clean business hub for the municipality.

He told a recent gathering that he had been in touch with the police about the problem and was informed that they would be working to get rid of the ladies of the night.

actually I have to disagree....when it comes to missing drug addicted prostitutes the colour has no impact.

Just look at alll those women in BC that the guy murdered and fed to the pigs. Many of them were white.

Serial killer Robert Pickton should be charged with killing six more women who disappeared from B.C., RCMP said yesterday.

Police struggle to arrest child prostitution on 'Back Road'

The phenomenon of minors engaging in prostitution on Port Henderson Road in St Catherine is well known to the police but arresting the matter is proving to be a major challenge.
The police are also struggling with a growing trend, where adult males are taking girls from schools to the hotels located on the strip known as 'Back Road'.

&quot;We have launched several operations against the prostitutes on 'Back Road' and these are continuing with a focus on the minors who are engaged in the trade,&quot; Superintendent Marlon Nesbeth, head of the St Catherine South police, told The Gleaner yesterday.

&quot;We have made some arrests but, when we hold these youngsters, the police cannot keep them and we sometimes have trouble finding places of safety to place them,&quot; said Nesbeth.

He said the police are working with the relevant state agencies to address the issue, while targeting nightclubs and other places on the 'Back Road' which attract the minors involved in prostitution.

&quot;We are also targeting the hotels because in the past few weeks we have found big men going into them during the day with girls in their school uniforms. But, those we have held so far, the girls were all older than 16,&quot; the senior cop added.

Contacting parents

He said in the instances where the children are older than 16, the police have been making contact with their parents and the schools in an effort to address the problem.

While Nesbeth was not able to provide details on the number of minors held by the police in recent weeks, he said the latest sweep of the area some two weeks ago resulted in several arrests but none of those held were children.

He said the police are to meet with the business operators shortly to express their concerns about prostitution in general and the growing involvement of minors in particular.

According to Nesbeth, some business operators are working with the police and reporting cases where minors are seen engaged in illicit activities.

The police can also count on the support of Portmore Mayor Keith Hinds, who is on a drive to clean up 'Back Road'.

&quot;I have already made it clear that we will not be easing up on the prostitutes and, worse, the children engaged in the act,&quot; Hinds said, as he reacted to yesterday's Gleaner report that a 15-year-old reported missing under the Ananda Alert was seen soliciting customers on 'Back Road'.

In the meantime, the Child Development Agency has advised the police to make contact with its placement officer if there is an issue of room in places of safety for children.
