Coconut thief to get psychiatric evaluation
A man who pleaded guilty to stealing 30 coconuts from the yard of the complainant told the court on Thursday that he did it because he was hungry.
Charged with praedial larceny is Cleon Clarke.
The allegations are that on November 25, Clarke went into the complainant's yard and picked 30 coconuts from his tree and put them in a bag. The complainant heard noises in his yard and called the police. When the police arrived, they reportedly found Clarke at the back of the house with a bag of items.
When the matter was mentioned in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court, the accused was asked why he had stolen the items. After a long pause, during which he stared into the distance, the accused, simply uttered, "Mi did hungry." To this the RM replied, "You alone wanted, to drink 30 jelly coconuts, cause you were hungry?"
The accused was ordered to undergo psychiatric evaluation and is to return to court on December 17.
