Donald Trump canceled a rally in Chicago tonight, citing safety concerns when protesters infiltrated an arena where Trump supporters were to meet. When the announcement was made that the rally had been postponed, the crowd erupted into cheers. Trump supporters who were on hand responded, "We want Trump! We want Trump!"
Fist-fights reportedly broke out in the crowd when the event was cancelled. The rally was to take place on the campus of the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Dozens of UIC faculty had asked administrators to cancel the rally, claiming that it would create a "hostile and physically dangerous environment" for students. In addition, an online petition gathered 50,000 signatures repudiating the rally and Trump.
Raucous verbal clashes between supporters and detractors of the leading Republican candidate. The crowd appeared to be equally divided between the two groups.
When an African-American protester was escorted out of the university area, the crowd shouted “Let them stay!” Supporters of Trump reported that they felt hatred directed at them from the anti-Trump forces. Others jumped up and down, shouting “Bernie! Bernie!” while others shouted "F--- Trump!" and "We stoppedTrump!"
Fox News quoted 20-year-old UIC student and Bernie Sanders supporter Kamran Siddiqui at the arena, who said “Trump represents everything America is not.” The student said that he and fellow students came to “shut this down,” saying “we don't want to let that person in here."
UIC is an urban campus with a large proportion of minority students, and where there is considerable organizing for issues relating to civil rights and immigration. Police separated them from Trump supporters with barricades. Trump chanted "USA! USA!" and "Illegal is illegal" One placard read, "Build a Wall AroundTrump. I'll Pay for it."
A statement from the Trump campaign said:
Mr. Trump just arrived in Chicago and after meeting with law enforcement has determined that for the safety of all of the tens of thousands of people that have gathered in and around the arena, tonight’s rally will be postponed to another date. Thank you very much for your attendance and please go in peace.
