PREACHER SCAMS BELIEVER OF $1.1M?
A Portmore, St Catherine-based evangelist who has been accused of falsely obtaining more than $1.1 million in tithes, first fruit and investment money from a woman in the Corporate Area, is set to appear in court.
Allegations are that between November 2008 and January 2009, the accused, Norma Lee, 44, of Bridgeport, collected $1,139,300 from the complainant, Melissa Haughton.
The allegations continued that the complainant first paid over US$6,800 (J$612,000) to the evangelist as an instalment in a Bishop T.D. Jakes Ministries investment scheme in the United States.
An additional US$3,080 (J$277,000) and J$220,000 was also allegedly paid over to the accused as 'first fruit'. Allegations continued that other sums were also paid over to the accused as tithes to her gospel ministry and contributions to a homeless boys' home she claimed she ran.
The court heard that the complainant reported the matter to the police after she got suspicious and requested her money back from the accused. The request was not honoured.
The accused woman is now set to appear in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court tomorrow to answer the charges.
The new mention date was set as the accused failed to show up to court yesterday after falling ill upon being apprehended by the police for the offence. She is currently in hospital under police guard.
