TIGER WOODS will start the next golfing season with a huge question mark hanging over him for the second year running.
Last year the big doubt was whether the world No 1 would be the same player after eight months off after knee surgery.

When he returns to action in 2010 - probably at the San Diego Invitational in January - the golfing world will want to know if Woods can overcome the incredible meltdown in his private life.

The repercussions from the sordid affairs that have destroyed his squeaky-clean image will not suddenly disappear once Woods starts swinging a club again.

And it will be interesting to see how the American galleries react, especially some of the booze-fuelled fans who show at plenty of PGA events.

But it will be even more illuminating to see how Woods responds himself - although one of his closest pals, Open champion Stewart Cink, is convinced it will not interrupt his relentless pursuit of golfing immortality.

After a blank year in the Majors in 2009, Woods is four short of equalling Jack Nicklaus' record of 18, a mark that suddenly looks a lot more distant.

But Cink insisted: &quot;I don't think that whatever comes out of this will affect his golf because he's such a professional.

&quot;And part of being a professional is to separate your personal life from what you do on the course. He'll find a way.&quot;

Another of the golfers closest to Woods, world No 3 Steve Stricker, suggested <span style="font-weight: bold">he should purge himself on an Oprah Winfrey-style chat show and seek public redemption that way.</span>

Stricker said: &quot;It's been hard just to see what's been going on with him the last few days. I'm not going to kid you - it was a shock to see all that.

&quot;His image is going to take a little bit of a shot and I'd like to see him come on TV and just pour it out a little bit and show what's happened.

&quot;I don't know if that'll ever happen. If he just does the right things from here on out, people will forgive him.

&quot;But as far as bouncing back, we all know what kind of person and player he is and how hard he works at things.

&quot;So I'm sure he will bounce back. I don't think there's any question about that.&quot;

Double Open champion Padraig Harrington admitted Tiger's transgressions were the talk of the locker room.

He revealed: &quot;It's pretty legitimate for people to be discussing it. We're all interested in a bit of gossip, it's part of human nature, I suppose.&quot;

One thing is certain - Stricker's suggestion Woods should pour his heart out on TV will not be the last piece of advice he hears on the subject.
