5-Y-O BEATEN, LEFT FOR DEAD - Cops arrest teen for attack

A five-year-old boy was recently found in a riverbed in August Town, St Andrew, severely beaten to the point of unconsciousness and had to be hospitalised.

The child is believed to have been assaulted by a 16-year-old boy, who is now facing an assault charge in the Children's Court. The teen, who pleaded not guilty, was remanded and should return to court on January 14.

Reports are that the child was found with his eyes swollen shut, deep bruises to the upper and lower sections of the face, swollen mouth, a sprained neck and four missing teeth, among other injuries.

The August Town police told THE STAR that the child had been reported missing and was found early the next morning by the police.

The child's battered body was found in the dried up riverbed, a few metres from his home. He was immediately rushed to hospital where he was admitted in a critical but stable condition.

A police officer who saw the child, described his beating as brutal and condemned the action of the attacker. The officer indicated that the child's cheeks were rubbed off and horribly bruised.

<span style="font-weight: bold">Allegations are that there was a misunderstanding between the child and the teen a few days before the incident</span>. It is alleged that he was eventually attacked and thrown to the ground on several occasions. His neck was allegedly squeezed while he was held down on a rusty zinc.

While on the zinc, it is claimed that the child struggled with the teen and received some of the injuries in addition to those inflicted.

The child cannot speak properly and is unable to chew or swallow due to the severity of his injuries.

The August Town police say they are doing further investigations.

<span style="font-weight: bold"> A supervisor at the city’s Administration for Children’s Services who was taking her two young daughters to school in The Bronx was shot dead this morning as the girls looked on in horror, shouting &quot;Mommy, mommy, I want my mommy.&quot;

The tragedy unfolded at 7:15 a.m. as Laikisha Scriven, 30, was buckling her daughters, 8 and 5, into a car seat in the back of her Ford Explorer, according to police and ACS sources. She was taking them to school before reporting to her job as a supervisor of caseworkers.

As Scriven was bent over the rear seat, buckling the safety belts, a man approached from behind and yanked her from the vehicle that was parked outside her home at 4231 Furman Ave.

While the girls watched, the gunman forced Scriven to the front of the vehicle.

&quot;He dragged her kicking and screaming from the van. She puts up a struggle, but he shoots her,&quot; a police source said.
Scriven was shot at least once in the head. The shooter fled the scene.

Cops have yet to identify a suspect. They described the shooter as a black male of slim build and wearing an orange jacket.

A neighbor said she heard the children screaming.


&quot;I’ll hear those kids voices, their voices will ring in my ear and in my head,&quot; said Marie Singh, 69, who lives across the street from Scriven’s apartment building.

Police don’t believe Scriven’s murder was connected to her work as a caseworker supervisor, but more likely from a personal relationship. Sources said there is a history of domestic violence.


Scriven was taken to Jacobi Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
An ACS spokeswoman said Scriven’s daughters are with relatives.
&quot;The NYC Administration for Children’s Services is in mourning for Ms. Scriven, and we extend our condolences to her family,&quot; said agency spokesman Sharman Stein.


Scriven was a Child Protective Specialist Supervisor in the Bronx Borough Office at 1220 Waters Place. She was hired as a caseworker in 2005 and promoted to supervisor in 2007.

A neighbor in Scriven’s building described her as a hard-working parent who completed college while working full-time.
&quot;She was a very nice person, we met in the elevator. She has two beautiful children,&quot; said Sophie Phillips. &quot;It’s really, really sad. I feel bad for the kids.
