An animal trainer has had his hand amputated and suffered serious head and chest injuries after being attacked by three tigers at a celebrity circus event.
Christian Walliser, 28, was mauled after he stumbled during a show in Hamburg and remains in a critical condition in hospital.
The 200 diners, who had paid about £120 to attend, at first thought it was all part of the show. Only when the tigers started to bite and claw Walliser did they realise the it was for real.
Stefan Pagels, the direcor of the show, said: “According to their nature the three big cats began to ‘play’ with the animal trainer as a spontaneous reaction.
“An accident is unfortunately always possible during certain special tricks with animals on the trapeze or on the high wire.”
The tigers were eventually driven back into their cages by staff using water cannon.
It was then that a doctor from within the audience tried to stabilise the performer by stopping the bleeding.
German website circusworld.de described Walliser as an "experienced handler".
Show organisers have decided to live up to the motto ‘the show will go on’ and press ahead with arrangements for the next event on December 15
