Smoke forced the evacuation of the world’s most famous holiday shopping center — Macy’s in Herald Square — today after a blaze broke out under an escalator.
Already set back by a massive snowstorm that dumped nearly a foot of snow on Manhattan, last-minute shoppers were challenged by the freaky fire between the third and fourth floors that filled parts of the department store with thick, black smoke and raised the anxiety level higher than its tallest Christmas tree.
"There was a lot of dense smoke," said Mia Hernandez, 33, a secretary from The Bronx. "People looked panicked. This is what we get for putting off our shopping until the last minute."</span>
