A British couple who caused a commotion during which they assaulted a police officer at the Norman Manley International Airport on Monday -- nearly resulting in the cancellation of flights -- was fined over $20,000, after they pleaded guilty to a number of charges in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court Wednesday.
The couple, Rochelle and Duwayne Binns -- both aged 29 -- were sentenced by Resident Magistrate Valerie Edwards after they changed their not-guilty pleas to guilty.
They were both fined $1,000 or five days for obstructing police, $1,000 or five days for resisting arrest, $2,000 or five days for assaulting the police, $2,000 or five days for disorderly conduct and $20,000 or 10 days for using indecent language.
The husband was also fined $25,000 or 10 days for using abusive language.
The investigating officer told the court that Mrs Binns, who was returning to England, was at the airport checking in her luggage at the Virgin Atlantic checkpoint, while her husband was standing in the line.
However, a port security officer told him to leave as he was obstructing the movement of people. He refused.
A police officer then approached him and asked him to leave but he refused and started to behave boisterously manner, while shouting and using expletives.
The officer tried to hold on to him but he grabbed the shirt of the officer. His wife, on seeing the commotion, went over and started to push the officer.
The investigating officer said the couple began shouting, and using indecent and abusive language, which drew aviation officials to the scene.
Another officer who saw what was happening went over to them and held on to the woman, while her sister. Nicola Martin, an employee of the ministry of national security, allegedly joined in the fracas, assaulted the officer, and ordered him to leave her sister alone, the investigating officer said.
The court was told that on learning that she would be arrested, Martin allegedly declared that she worked with National Security Minister Dwight Nelson and that she was a police officer and that she knew her rights.
Attorney Dionne Barnett, who represented the Binnses, told the court that her clients were sorry and regretted what took place.
She also told RM Edwards that Mrs Binns wished to inform the court that she did not use indecent language at the officers. Barnett said that she was only trying to calm her husband, but because he was shouting she also had to shout for him to hear her.
The lawyer asked that the indecent language charge be admonished and discharged, but her request was denied.
Martin, who is charged with impersonating a police officer, obstructing police, resisting arrest, assaulting a police officer, disorderly conduct and using indecent language, is to return to court on January 5 for trial. Her bail was extended.
