... sticks in my mind ...
We went to an early dinner on New Year’s Eve with some friend of ours and new neighbors. It was a really nice evening.
One of the women there, I was meeting for the first time. She’s a mom who just came home for the holidays and is going back to Iraq in a few weeks. It was the first time I’d met a Muslim serving in the US Military. Her stories were chilling as to what’s going on over there. Though horrific, she says she’d take being in Iraq any day over being in Afghanistan. She was born and raised a Muslim and told us how she reconciled a long long time ago, going into the service. She explained how the Koran teaches it’s wrong to take up arms against another Muslim. I had a lot of questions about this but, I didn’t want to ruin the night so I left it alone. She didn't drink any alcohol but she was smoking like a chimney. I wanted to ask her about this as well but, I didn't. Hell, I guess anyone who's able to survive Iraq deserves a ciggy now & then.
As the evening drew to a close, the conversation inevitably drifted toward the tried and true question of our new year’s wishes and resolutions. The question went around the room.
When it landed on the Captain, she simply said, “I just want to come back home alive or not gravely wounded.”
Dang if THAT didn’t put it all in perspective!
The next afternoon, one of my girlfriends called me and was going on & on & on about whether or not she & her husband should enlarge their kitchen and proceed with an addition to the back of their house and how they’ve been fighting about it. I tried, I really tried to feel her pain but – I failed. I had to hang up the phone.

Hope you all had a wonderful New Year and wishing best of health for you and your family.
Happy New Year everyone!
