GRANDE PRAIRIE — Convicted eco-terrorist Wiebo Ludwig is under arrest and a massive search of his Trickle Creek property is underway this morning.

The arrest and search are in connection with a number of gas pipeline bombings in B.C.

Witnesses now at the farm near Hythe say Ludwig was arrested around 8 a.m. this morning.

About 10 police vehicles and up to 30 officers are now combing the area.

The bombings targeting Calgary-based Encana sites started in October 2008.

Insp. Tim Shields says a man in his 50s or 60s was taken into custody around 8 a.m. this morning on the farm about 25 kilometres east of the B.C.-Alberta boundary.

There have been six pipeline bombings in the Tomslake area since October 2008 targeting Calgary-based Encana (TSX:ECA).

In a letter to local media, the bomber demanded that the company cease operations in the region.

Another letter sent to the Dawson Creek Daily News in July warned that things “could get a lot worse” if the company did not cease operations in the region.

HYTHE, Alta. — Wiebo Ludwig’s lawyer says the convicted pipeline bomber has been arrested and will be charged with extortion after a series of bombings in British Columbia.

Paul Moreau says he’s not sure what is behind the extortion charge and has not seen the evidence against his client yet.

Dozens of RCMP officers swept onto Ludwig’s farm in northwestern Alberta near the B.C. boundary and began a search.

There have been six pipeline bombings targeting Calgary-based Encana (TSX:ECA) in the Tomslake area since October 2008.

The search represents a dramatic turn in the investigation.

Ludwig is well known in Alberta, having been convicted for two gas well bombings in the province in the late 1990s.

EDMONTON — Convicted oilpatch bomber Wiebo Ludwig has written an open letter to whoever is planting explosives on EnCana’s pipelines in northeastern British Columbia, urging a peaceful resolution, but also expressing admiration.

Up until now, Ludwig has commented little on the six bombings over the last 10 months in the area of Tomslake, B.C., across the border from where he lives near Hythe, Alta.

However, in a letter sent to media organizations, Ludwig wrote that he felt he had to come forward to show solidarity with the bomber’s concerns while urging him to abandon the bombings.

“I want to encourage you not to let anger about such stupidity get the best of you and to realize that these conflicts cannot ultimately be settled by use of force but by way of informed and patient persuasion,” Ludwig wrote. “Please give that the time it needs now.”

Since October, 2008, when an anonymous resident wrote to a Dawson Creek, B.C., newspaper warning EnCana to cease their projects in the area, remote pipelines and wellheads have been hit by explosions. No one has been hurt in any of the blasts.

A letter after the last bombing called for a three-month truce.

Ludwig said that limiting the attacks against remote infrastructure was “thoughtful restraint.”

RCMP investigators have called the incidents “domestic terrorism.”

EnCana has offered a $1 million reward for information about the bomber, but no arrests have been made. The reward is the highest in Canada since $1 million was offered in connection with the Air India bombing that killed 329 people in 1985.

RCMP have consistently said some people in the area have not been cooperative with the bombing investigation.

Although Ludwig urged an end to violent methods, he sympathized with the concerns that led to them.

“You need to know that you have already set a lot of good things in motion,” the letter reads. “You’ve truly woken a lot of people up and stimulated some very valuable discussion.”

While many people share the bomber’s concerns about nearby sour gas wells, the letter reads, most do so in silence for fear of criticism if they speak out.

Ludwig also mentioned that many locals fear what the bomber will eventually do if their demands for EnCana to leave the area are not met.

Ludwig is a longtime activist who claimed sour gas wells adversely affected human health, including that of his family members. He was released from prison in 2001 after serving two-thirds of a 28-month sentence for five charges related to oilpatch bombing and vandalism.

Dawson Creek Mayor Mike Bernier hadn’t read Ludwig’s comments, but was encouraged that the Alberta farmer took a stand against the violent methods.

“If Mr. Ludwig is saying that these kinds of actions are not the way to go, then he’s singing the same song as us,” Bernier said Saturday evening. “We all want a peaceful end to this.”

EnCana did not respond to Ludwig’s letter.

“We haven’t seen the letter and likely wouldn’t comment on it,” said spokesman Alan Boras.

RCMP Cpl. Don Moskaluk said officers involved with the case had also not yet seen the letter.

Wiebo Ludwig, an Alberta activist convicted of bombing oil and gas wells in the 1990s, has been arrested and faces an extortion charge in connection with more recent bombings at EnCana pipelines in northeastern B.C., according to his Edmonton lawyer.

"I can advise you that that I've been told by the RCMP that Rev. Ludwig is in custody under arrest, and he is to be charged with one count of extortion," Paul Moreau told CBC News on Friday.

When asked when the charge was to be laid, Moreau replied, "immediately."

Ludwig was arrested at a hotel in Grande Prairie, Alta., Friday morning after going there voluntarily to meet with a senior RCMP officer, Moreau said.

So far, RCMP have said they have arrested a man in his 50s or 60s and are conducting a massive search of an Alberta farm. They didn't release the man's name.

The man was taken into custody around 8 a.m. Friday at the farm near Hythe, Alta., about 400 kilometres northwest of Edmonton, near the B.C.-Alberta border, police said.

Ludwig spent nearly two years in prison on charges related to the bombing of oil and gas installations in Alberta in the 1990s.

He also sent an open letter to the EnCana pipeline bomber in September 2009 expressing his support but urging the bombings to stop.

More than a dozen officers are searching the property for evidence related to the bombings.

"We cannot say what we are looking for specifically, or what information led us to the location, but we have followed a trail of evidence that ultimately led to the execution of the search warrant," said Supt. Lloyd Plante, with the RCMP's National Security Program in B.C.

Before the first attack, someone sent a handwritten letter to local media demanding a stop to oil and gas operations.

The letter called EnCana and other companies "terrorists" that are "endangering our families with crazy expansion of deadly gas wells."

The note was followed by three successive explosions, two of which caused leaks of sour gas, which contains toxic hydrogen sulphide.

At the time of the sixth and most recent attack in July 2009, the RCMP labelled the attacks "domestic terrorism."

Reserves in the Tomslake area are mostly sour gas, which contains hydrogen sulphide that can be deadly in high concentrations if released into the air.
