What? If Kingston was struck with the same magnitude earthquake, it would be equally catastrophic. And since the major tectonic fault lines pass near Kingston and Portmore, this is the area likely to be affected.

Haiti was 7.0 on the Richter scale.
Keep in mind that the 1692 earthquake that made 90% of Port Royal sink into the sea was a 7.5

The 1907 earthquake that destroyed Kingston was a 6.5

Due to the composition of the land, the sand tends to liquify under the city causing widespread damage.
Earthquakes of a lesser magnitude will cause more damage in Jamaica than in places like California
where the base is more solid.

This remind me during the hurricane season after the hurricane bash Jamaica and it was not too badly massacred. All the pundits claim that Cayman would fare better, because they had better structures, because they are wealthy.
Well cayman lost 80% of all structures and damage to every single building. Many People underestimate the way most Jamaican building are constructed.
They are better constructed and capable of taking greater punishment that the majority of Us homes.
As for Haiti,.I have been there.
And they don't use steel in even slab roof.
where Jamaican always use that 6 inch welded.
As for the buildings over the waters, they can take a 7 on the richter scale anytime.

Structures are different today then Jamaica only had wooden structures, and the measurement is far different between now and then.
At present Jamaica Really measure on the Modified Mordecai scale.

Every disaster worldwide brings out your comparison with the failings of other Jurisdictions juxtaposed against the perceived virtues of Jamaica. Be it Political, Economic or Natural, the outcome is Jamaica the Rock is always virtuous.

Newsflash! Building codes can be ignored, culture can change and in Jamaica's case from a long held culture of carefully building in preparation for natural disasters to a culture of anything goes. Just this week the Jamaica Observer highlighted a the story of a graduate of UTECH that turned to farming, at one point he was pictured in a rudimentary block factory. There no information on whether or not the block were be made at the correct tolerances.

A few years ago the Cement Company was in the news for making bad cement the use of which resulting in whole buildings tumbling down, sans natural disaster.
If all the foregoing was not troubling enough, think of the economy and the poor maintenance of the roads, drains, gullies, culverts and flood plains....which is basically was i was trying to highlight. <span style="font-family: 'Arial Black'">It does not matter if your whole house is constructed of steel when the foundation upon which it rest is not secure, nothing is.</span>

<span style="font-family: 'Arial Black'">More hocus pocus</span>. Present the scientific evidence to prove that wooden structures are more vulnerable in an earthquake? There is none, <span style="font-family: 'Arial Black'">zero</span>. In fact it the opposite. The reason why wooden structure would present a greater danger in an earthquake is if a fire breaks out it more likely to cause more damage than if most of the buildings were constructed of more fire resistant materials.

<span style="font-family: 'Arial Black'">Earthquake mitigation</span> is based on geography, building design, construction technique. The solid skin materials, even though it is part of the consideration is less of an issue than the foregoing.
