Major dome collapse suspected at Soufriere Hills

At about 2.50 p.m. today, Friday, January 8, 2010 residents all over Montserrat and especially in the south of the occupied areas could see what the Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO)director, Dr. Paul Cole<span style="font-weight: bold"> says he suspects is possibly a large dome collapse.</span>
There was almost panic in the voice of one caller who advised me to look out from my office at Davy Hill to see the ash clouds shooting repeatedly upwards to the sky on the northeastern side of the dome.
ZJB’s Winston ‘Kafu’ Cabey who interviews and reports on the volcanic activity, spoke to Dr. Paul Cole who himself was not present at the MVO during the activity, which continued for some time and still at the time of the interview at about 3.05 p.m.
Dr. Cole said that there were no precursory warnings whatsoever to the activity, but he was speaking from reports he gathered from his staff at the MVO, some of whom (Admin staff) reports said had been asked to leave their offices. He advised residents to leave Zone B which is the area ordered to be evacuated by night since December 10, last year, to leave the area and at least move to Zone A.
The siren’s were activated and the order to “evacuate, evacuate,” was heard in the south. Dr. Cole said in the live interview with Cabey, “the situation is ongoing, but at the moment we would advise people at the sound of the siren to evacuate, and therefore anybody within the region of the Belham Valley should make their way into zone ‘A’ at least.”
He reported with obvious uncertainty in some details, “(seems) there has been a partial dome collapse, we don’t know how big exactly that event is with pyroclastic flows going to the north east and also going to the north west at Tyres Ghaut and down Dyers river and down into the Balham Valley…”
He said they perceived as they could not be certain yet, whether, “it was a small dome collapse, partial dome collapse or whether it was a larger one.”
What was left following the sudden activity is where the ash would fall. It appeared, as the ash clouds of varying gray drifted northwards and mostly westwards over the Old Towne, Isle’s Bay and further south areas would surely fall far north. However first reports from Olveston said there was only a dusting and although the clouds are high over the north, there has been none to the point of posting.Comment

These are thrilling times if you are a visitor to Montserrat, not so much if you live there. The Soufriere Hills volcano is acting up again, with recent pyroclastic flows triggering a level 4 alert (on a 1-5 scale) and forcing evacuations in some residential areas closest to the volcano. The Montserrat Volcano Observatory is reporting the formation of a large, rapidly growing lava dome atop the volcano, which could portend a major eruption. All in all, the last month has seen some of the most serious volcanic activity on the island since the mid-1990s, when a major eruption entombed the former capital of Plymouth and led to mass evacuations off the island.
Montserrat's population centers are now all located in the northern half of the island and are generally considered safe, and flights to and from the island continue despite persistent ash clouds emanating from the Soufriere Hills.
At night, visitors have a rare opportunity to witness an active volcano closeup, including glowing lava flows and rockfalls down the slope of the volcanic cone. While you're there, buy a drink for one of Montserrat's proud and friendly locals, many of whom are bunking up with friends while they wait for 'Madame Soufriere' to calm down and for authorities to allow them to return to their homes.
