anyone else find it annoying that to access some of Jamaica's major media homes you have to pay a subscription thru this Jumptv system?
even fame fm.. imagine that.. a frikin fm radio station..

its hard to subscribe to this company simply to watch a local news procgram or listen radio when many countries and radio stations stream theirs without subscription fees over the net..

I use to subscribe to RJR before they start charging.
and they had a poll as to the rate. and decide to charge more than any US media then. I refused to pay.
So I discontinue the subscription.
What I notice is the Jamaican media houses,are only interested going after local listners even on the Internet.
They estimated their market on the basis of the bandwaith they are willing to pay for.
So they keep the visitor volume low and pay lower cost of bandwidth.
if you notice if RJR page is busy, it simply is crippled. Actually I am surprised that all media out of Jamaica available online is not via the paid model.
Bandwidth and Communication lines are very expensive.
Not to mention manpower to run the technical side of things.

The only reason I would not pay one broke dime for media products from Jamaica Media is most are nothing but mouthpieces for one or two special interests and I would hate to be putting money in the pocket of such cretins.

manpower and bandwidth to stream sound and video over the internet is cheap..
Internet media is actually cheaper than traditional/terestial methods.

technical? chus mi a (tech TV)7 year old can stream over the internet... ok, ok.. a 10 year old..

its seems to me to be greed and short sightedness..

exactly, i mean there is advertisment (earning) opportunities being missed.

an easy target such as tourism for example.
small (and even large) tourism interest could use the medium to reach the international community.
so and so taxi service, so and so tour service, so and so restaurant, so and so bread and breakfast, so and so car rental service, so and so real estate agency..

then again maybe you wouldnt want potential tourist to see the 7PM News..
But Fame FM for example, why is THAT a subscription service????

Not from Jamaica. Streaming is not difficult but remember streaming is life a pipe carrying water there can only be a finite connection before the volume, velocity and overall quality of the stream degrade. You need a wide band and repeaters.

I think the whole thing is gone about wrong in Jamaica. To much piecemeal, one man operation, dependant on one communications shop to deliver the goods.
The media in Jamaica should have cleverly pressured the Government to use the Universal Access Fund to subsidize Broadband for the masses.
This it the real reason why Broadband in the USA is readily available and almost ubiquitous in Europe and some other countries.
