Richard and Merle Roper, in 2012 when he was inducted into the school's Hall of Fame
Richard Roper, former headmaster of Munro College, died Wednesday morning at age 89.
Mr. Roper, who was headmaster of the St. Elizabeth based boarding school for boys for 27 years, passed away at hospital early Wednesday morning.
He's survived by his wife, Merle, and three sons.
Richard Roper became a national sensation in 1955 when he was appointed Headmaster at age 28, one of the youngest persons ever appointed to head a high school in Jamaica.
He was educated at Jamaica College and McGill University in Canada.
Immediately after leaving Jamaica College, he was appointed a junior master at Munro, where he taught biology from 1946 to 1947. He then went to McGill, where he gained his BSc. and MSc. in Biology. He returned to Jamaica in 1951, and taught at Wolmer’s Boys School, before resuming his association with Munro the following year. Three years later, in 1955, he was appointed Headmaster, a position he held until his retirement in 1982.
Upon retirement, he then became head of the Bible Society of the West Indies. He also resuscitated the local branch of the Jamaica Agricultural Society, while serving for many years as a Justice of the Peace.
