they lose one seat and they start running around like roaches when the light comes on. They are still the majority and yet still look like clowns. The people gave them 60 seats and they threw that way because they could not make it hgappen. Now they are wondering why they are loosing seats...I must tell you the Rebuplica party may be from mars but they at lease stick together as eveident in whats going on. They even oppose thier own ideas if the other party think its a good idea and vote againts it. Thats cohesion at its best.
Why is the U.S Democrats party so weak?

Re: Why is the U.S Democrats party so weak?
Problem is twofold
The GOP has made it a priority to "weed out" from representational politics anyone not willing to toe the party line - so there are very few exceptions. After all, John McCain campaigned as the "Maverick" when all he did was maintain a SEMBLANCE of independent thinking - that should tell you how monolithic the GOP has become. This means that there is a guaranteed block of votes that will either be "FOR" or "AGAINST" a specific topic. If you want to be against something, one of the ways is to "debate" the topic as a stalling tactic. I say stalling tactic because there are rarely any changed positions that come out of the debate. Changed positions come from negotiations that happen before debate in closed rooms. That stalling via debate is what is called a "filibuster". The only way therefore to get something passed is to push it past "debate" and straight to vote. That requires a "Super Majority" which means 60+ votes. Because the GOP tends to vote in a block, if they have 41 votes, you have a pretty good chance that you will never have more than one or two votes going over to the other side, and usually at a huge negotiating cost. This is why the super majority is such a big deal
Secondly, with the polemic nature of party politics at this time, complex issues get distilled into 30-second, soundbite friendly categorizations which paint the issue into a PRO or ANTI position depending on your loyalties. So something as complicated and as involved as a Health Care debate turns into Death Panels and Socialism

This is not true. First of all, the GOP does not have a "party line" ( nor any recognizable party leader to set any priorities for that matter ) at the moment.
And if you are referring to the the so called "purity test" proposed by James Bopp, it was rejected by the RNC Chairmen at their meeting in Hawaii last month.
While (some) in the media continue to make much of the tea baggers, whether this fringe movement will morph into a dominant force within the party remains to be seen...all the hype of the moment notwithstanding.

yes they rejected it and replaced it with a non binding "suggestion" that the committees only support candidates who support their core principles. When its hot in the jungle of peace I go swimming in the ocean of love.....

I still don't know what you guys are referring to as "core priciples" or "party line".
If you are referring to the platform that the Republican Party adopted at their 2008 National Convention, well, not even John McCain adhered to it prior to being chosen the GOP's presidential candidate.
In any event, the "suggestions" as you rightly call them, will still give local party representatives the discretion to choose candidates.

core principles is not my term ..it's a term used by the wing of the Republican party that wants to see them remain hard right.. as far as i can tell the core principles they refer to are the core principles of conservatism.
ETA: given the current climate and the rhetoric being thrown around do you think they will really allow the discretion you talk about?

ascording to the ones who want to keep the party hard right. the most vocal ones..the one who seem to have the biggest microphones.
im wondering it that all politics is local is valid anymore...with the way information and mis information is spread these day it looks like people are having a much harder time differentiating between what is affecting them directly and what will have no real effect on their lives. When its hot in the jungle of peace I go swimming in the ocean of love.....

Who ? Glenn Beck ? Rush Limbaugh ? Bill O'Reilly ?
Note, none of these guys either hold, have ever held, nor have offered themselves for public office.
There is a reason for this.

of course it valid, richard. just because the average joe fails to realize (or conduct themselves within that realm) doesnt make it less valid.
i agree that all politics is local...which is why i dont look to washington when i need things done. i go and stalk write letters to my govenor and local officials that ARE NOT in DC. now dont get me wrong...we need washington for agenda setting and all of that...but when it come to actually accomplishing something that directly effects my everyday life....I say stay local.
