I'm a flight attendant, and trust me, you DO NOT want to use the blankets on airplanes. I have seen people sneeze into these things, wrapped around their heads...People may think so, but blankets are not changed on every flight. They're just folded and put back in the bins. That blanket you're using has been used by countless people before you. This is actually a welcome change for us flight attendants: no more having to touch those nasty things. I love it.</span>

American Airlines to stop offering free blankets on domestic flights</span>

Starting May 1, American Airlines will sell blankets and pillows on domestic flights.


(CNN) -- Chilly on the plane? Bring a sweater, or $8 for a blanket-and-pillow pack, if you're on a domestic American Airlines flight.

On May 1, the carrier will begin charging for a pillow and blanket set on all domestic flights, as well as those to or from Canada, Mexico, Hawaii, the Caribbean and Central America, according to American Airlines spokesman Tim Smith.

The $8 charge buys a blue fleece blanket and an inflatable neck pillow that fliers can use in flight and keep for future use.

&quot;American evaluates all aspects of the business to ensure that economic decisions are prudent and strategic for the long-term success of the company,&quot; Smith said in an e-mail announcing the decision.

Passengers on international flights or in premium class cabins still will be offered complimentary blankets for use in flight.

JetBlue Airways started selling blanket and pillow packs in 2008. US Airways started charging for sleep kits last year.

i flew Jetblue recently..the (for a fee)blankets/pillows were in sealed bags and the packaging stated they were brand new..(of course I had my own)

Hey Magic........8,00 blankies

AA airlines just announced that beginning in May they will charge passengers 8.00 a whop for those flimsy blankets they give you on the flights. Short domestic flights, blankets will not be available at any price.... wha next??? Wha next mia ask you?????

Like mi seh already, US airlines pop dung!

Now just this morning on a turnaround flight we had extra time so mi decide to go to economy (coach) and help the flight attendants lay out the headsets and blankets on the seats. And mek mi tell you dem blankets are thick. Matta a fact can only carry about 10 at a time cause they're bulky even when folded.

Now in first class you get a duvet much like you sleep under at home.
Now the piece of flammable polyerser fabrik that AA give you is not worth
a dime.

but dont you have to put it up 1 hour before di flight land?
mi just gwine start get to know mi seatmates betta, daht way mi can snuggle wid dem and get warm that way.

even in the packages I question how &quot;clean&quot; they are. fi mi kinda clean a nuh fi dem kinda clean

actually no.. i flew out of kingston and the airport security checks/search were enough to make a grown man cry... but dem neva enforced the in flight security part bout putting away blankets, etc.

Putting away blankets for takeoff and landing has nothing to do with security.
It's done so that in case of an evacuation, people don't trip on the blankets, hand luggage etc.

Same reason why you are asked to put your seatbacks in the upright position.
It's to speed up the evacuation process as the reclined seatback will hinder
procgress for the people behind you.

Window shades are supposed to be open as well (something a lot of airlines fail to do)
that's so that the cabin crew can assess the situation outside the aircraft and decide
which exits to use for evacuation.

And finally lights dimmed for night time takeoff so that your pupils are adjusted to
darkness for the potential evacuation. Which is supposed to be completed in less than 90 seconds.
