MAN HIDES COKE IN ANUS

A man who pleaded guilty to attempting to export cocaine by hiding it in his anus was yesterday sentenced to one year's imprisonment at hard labour when the matter came up in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court.

The accused, Nayman Harriott, 40, was charged with possession and taking steps to export cocaine.

The court was told that Harriott was caught at the Norman Manley International Airport as he was about to leave the island for England. It is alleged that he was scanned, searched and interrogated and it was revealed that he had drugs hidden inside him. The court was further told that parcels containing <span style="font-weight: bold">two ounces of cocaine were taken from his rectum</span>. Two ounces is worth more than £6,000.

Harriott's attorney told the court that Harriott was a British citizen, but also Jamaican. She said he was an only child and the sole person who cares for his parents in England. She said the accused made a mistake and was sorry and pleaded with Resident Magistrate Stephanie Haisley not to impose a jail term, but to instead fine the accused and <span style="font-weight: bold">send him back to England. </span>

RM Haisley, however, told the attorney that she could not grant that wish. She said she had taken into consideration the fact that the accused was an only child and that his parents need him, but said he was old enough to know that what he did was wrong. She said the mode in which he was trying to smuggle the drugs also had to be considered as it suggested that he was willing to risk his life to export the contraband. She said: &quot;If his parents pay the fines and he goes home, what punishment would he have received?&quot;

The accused was fined $50,000 or three months for possession and sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment for taking steps to export the drug. The latter sentence was initially 16 months, but after much pleading from the attorney it was reduced.
