A Jamaican man, who admitted to smuggling marijuana into Barbados by swallowing 64 pellets with the drug, has been sentenced to 24 months in jail.
Michael Francis pleaded guilty to having drugs, trafficking cannabis with intent to supply and importing, when he appeared before Magistrate Robert Simmons yesterday.
He was given two 12 month sentences for trafficking and importing, which will run concurrently.
The police say Francis arrived in Barbados on February 4 to spend a week.
Investigators say when he was questioned at the Grantley Adams International Airport he admitted to swallowing the pellets filled with the drug and was taken to hospital where x-rays confirmed their presence.
Francis said he accepted a US$500 offer to smuggle the drugs because of hardships with his family.
