Three detectives acquitted in the shooting death of Sean Bell will not face federal civil rights charges.
Bell’s parents, who had been pushing for federal charges, say they are disappointed by the news they received today during their meeting with federal prosecutors today.
Prosecutors say there is insufficient evidence that any of the law enforcement personnel involved acted willfully.
The Department of Justice released a statement saying, "Neither accident, mistake, fear, negligence, nor bad judgement is sufficient to establish a federal criminal rights violation."
Police fired 50 shots at Bell and his two friends outside a Jamaica strip club in November of 2006 on what was to be Bell's wedding day. The detectives believed that one of the men was armed, but no weapon was ever recovered.
The case sent shockwaves through the city, and the detectives' acquittal on criminal charges in April 2008 sparked outrage and protests.
