work snow days

when your company's offices are closed due to bad weather..do you still work (obviously this is not relevant to people who's jobs are physical in nature)?

i was kind of shocked when my customers' offices were closed all of last week and apparently they <span style="font-style: italic">really</span> did not work for the entire week... .I just assumed everyone would work remotely.

It varies by company but our physical offices were closed all week for snow and the aftermath. First two days we were closed completely, so technically nobody worked. The last 3 days they encouraged those who could to telecommute (not everyone has a laptop) but imposed no penalties on those who could not work - meaning no one had to take vacation time. That worked well for us because the snow conditions also messed up our childcare situation and it would have been impossible to work a normal day with 3 young kids around.

people that brought home work to do, i assume did so...
but no penalties for people who couldnt make it to work due to weather.

When The Federal Gov closed there was no work. Because of the sensitive nature of their business is a only a <span style="text-decoration: underline">small </span>population a di workforce even get fi carry home laptops I hate that.

also in the gov taxpayers woudl be up in arms of they thought the already lazy govt workers were not even having to come out of their homes

Anyway mi boss was telling mi a di fus eva dem eva lack fi so much days and like yuh sey if dem did shut down di whole week shi sey Taxpayers woulda up in arms I didn't know it was like that...

we get four paid snow days per year...and HELL NO i don't work during them.

if i run out of snow days....i then claim to be working at home.

snow days make no difference to me..I don't think my company even has a snow day policy

Some companies are cheap and refuse to purchase virtual connectivity for the entire workforce. (physical nature jobs excluded). They will only purchase licenses for management and sometimes only senior management. Then when the company is shut down they realize thier disaster preparedness plan is flawed cause dem loose how much $$ every day dem was shut.

Here on the island there is no snow but I do hope that you took the time out to do things that you were neglecting. I hope that your employers will also pay you for the week loss as well.

Our place has never been closed due to snow. Came close a couple times over the last 22 years but always open for business.

the funny thing is the people I spoke with did have remote access but for whatever reasons..since the offices were closed only used it to check in once in awhile...

i've been working remotely for such a long time me I don't see what difference it should make whether you're in the office or not..:shrug:

but your point about companies not planning properly is a different one..after this extensive shut for snow /o\ they might start to rethink dis,,
