<span style="font-weight: bold"> NEWARK - A Galloway Township man who told police he threw his infant (3months old) daughter off a bridge appeared in court via video this morning, pleading not guilty through his attorney.
Shamsiddin Abdur-Raheem, 21, is charged with attempted murder and kidnapping among other offenses in the abduction of his 3-month-old girl from her maternal grandmother's house in East Orange, Essex County.
The Stockton student allegedly forced his way into the apartment by hitting the 60-year-old woman in the face and choking her. She chased him outside and tried to stop him, police said, but was almost run over by the Dodge Caravan he was driving.
The maternal grandmother was hospitalized briefly, and released, according to a news release from the state Attorney General's Office. The murder charge stems from his alleged attack on her.
The infant has not been found.
The little girl's mother, Venetta Benjamin, sat in court with family members beside her, but refused to speak with reporters. She maintained a calm demeanor while waiting hours for the proceeding to start, but was seen dabbing her eyes at various times. When his image first appeared on the screen, she looked away, shaking her hand in front of her face.
Meanwhile, authorities resumed a search for the little girl, Zara Malani-Lin Abdur Raheem, this morning. Using boats, dogs and helicopters, they scoured the area beneath the Garden State Parkway's Driscoll Bridge all day Wednesday.
There was still no sign of the little girl today. The bridge, which is over the Raritan, is in Middlesex County, across the bridge from New York's Staten Island.
A woman who identified herself as the child's paternal grandmother, but who refused to give her name, said after the court proceeding that Abdur-Raheem's family do not know the whereabouts of the infant.
