Councillor warns person not to buy fish from the Portmore Fishing Village

Concerns are being raised about the level of pollution in the waters surrounding the Portmore Fishing Village in St. Catherine.
Alric Campbell, Councillor for the Edgewater Division, who is also the head of the Portmore Municipal Council's Public Health Committee, says there are high levels of pollutants in the area.
According to Mr. Campbell, a malfunctioning National Water Commission sewage treatment plant has resulted in effluent seeping into the nearby Dyke Road canal.
As a result, he is urging residents not to purchase fish from the fishing village until the matter is addressed.
"On any given day, you can see fecal matter in that water because there's a pond that the sewage feeds from into the canal which empties near the fishing village. I as the Chairman of Portmore Municipal Council's Public Health Committee, have asked NEPA (the National Environment and Planning Agency) to investigate but I believe that while pending the official report, its my responsibility to inform residents about the great health crisis there," Mr. Campbell said.
Meanwhile, Mr. Campbell is also voicing concerns about dumping taking place in the Dawkins Pond on Port Henderson Road in the municipality.
He noted that this could lead to serious problems for residents in several communities as the Dawkins Pond is a major catchment area for excess water.
"Business interests have dumped the area to extend the permits if their lands. That area is the catchment area for Portmore and so we're asking persons to desist from dumping in the area," Mr. Campbell said.
The councillor noted that the NEPA has already produced a report on the situation.
