The long list of grievances, known as the <span style="font-style: italic">Declaration of Independence</span>, drawn up by a committee including Jefferson, Franklyn, Sherman, et al, was greeted with scorn and ridicule by King George, and understandably so. Here was a series of complaints written by <span style="font-weight: bold">mostly</span> men who held slaves, treated them as property, denied the equality of all races, waged savage war against the Native Americans while describing them as &quot;savages&quot;, treated women as second-class citizens, yet here they were bellowing about FREEDOM! The irony seemed to have escaped them.

To be fair, though, not all of the 'founders' were slave holders or supported slavery, and two prominent ones - Ben Franklyn and John Adams - did NOT own slaves, and moreover, were opposed to slavery. Adams, a Unitarian, was out-spoken about it, and Franklyn, opposed to it even before Independence, felt that the abolition of slavery would make a wonderful act of &quot;thanksgiving&quot; for America's new found freedom. And there were still some - a tiny few - who spoke out for the equality of all people regardless of race, gender, class or creed. I say this because not all abolitionists believed that all races are to be treated equally.

So, were the 'founding fathers' patriots or criminals? Some of them definitely were both.

Not to veer off course here, but there were Native Americans who held slaves too, and long after the Emancipation Declaration, a regiment had to be sent out to Oklahoma or some such place, to release a group of slaves from their Native American masters who had determined that they would not free their slaves. Not much is talked about this.
