it's ridiulous, unfair, and just plain lazy for the school to ruin an activity for all students, when it is only one person them have issue with. that punishes a whole group of ppl who have done nothing whatsoever 'wrong'.

if they have a problem with one student, they must DEAL with it -- state their position and present some kind of explanation as to why they have sed problem, and direct the punishment only to the one student they have issue with. Not just ignore the whole thing and then spoil it for everybody cause they too dyam lazy to address a specific issue that they themselves, identified as being a 'problem'.

canceling the whole ting for everyone only shows that their position is weak. they're abusing their authoriity by pulling a power play, just cause they can, in order to avoid any examination of the issue. they know in this day and age that they would be in for a fight; and regardless of what their position is or who does/does not agree with them - if they start somethin they must therefore be prepared take their stand and finish what they started - by defending their position, not start somethin and then run away like little children.

they got no stones. their response is lazy, lame and weak.

They did try to deal one on one, there actually was even a clause in the prom PRe-rules that dates must be of the opposite sedx (yep, they actually put that in writing).

Playing it out..she would have shown up in her tux with her date that night (I've seen her interviewed, she don't back down), and they would have had security deny them entrance, then the law suit would have followed.

I think the school board however, felt it was ONE couple this year, but open this can of worms and no telling what subsequent proms in the bible belt town would look like.

It's a catch 22 alright.

A hotel owner in New Orleans is offering to host prom for a rural Mississippi high school whose dance was canceled after a lesbian student wanted to take her girlfriend.

The ACLU demanded that officials at Itawamba County Agricultural High School change their policy against same-sex prom dates, and alleged the district violated 18-year-old Constance McMillen's free expression rights by not letting her wear a tux.

McMillen is asking a federal judge to force the school district to reinstate the dance.

Meanwhile, New Orleans hotel owner Sean Cummings is offering to take the students to New Orleans by bus, and host a free prom at one of his properties.

Cummings said he was struck by McMillen's convictions.

&quot;I admire her for standing up, and a lot of people support her,&quot; he said. &quot;They are being wronged... and wrongly so.&quot;

Cummings said he is still trying to connect with students on the details of his offer and hopes to do so over the weekend.

The message he wants all of the students to hear: &quot;Hey kids, your high school experience shouldn't be laced with negativity and policy decisions and legal skirmishes.&quot;
