So u took up Music, or u did always intrested in that? (Mi motha did piano one time, maybe some more classes )

when I got a package from a company I used to work for, I took 8 months off before I looked for another job. My dad said I would be bored within 2 weeks.....well, I was bawling my eyes out at the end of the 8 months because I did not WANT to begin working again

I found a million and one things to do with my time and wasnt bored for a second. I took violin lessons, started a few courses, took chi chi cooking clases, had lunch with my friends who were working, organized tons of things in the house, etc.

I loved my time to myself and would give up a kidney to have that kind of leisure time again

I didnt realize u were retired too caf. Good on you! You EARN the time fi sit back and enjoy life on your terms!

been doin music all my life tuffy, but in the past few years i learned a new instrument (one that i also loved all my life, but as a listener, not a musician) these past few years i finally learned how to play the thing & joined a band, which has been kind of a 2nd job. but as long as i was working full time i never had nuff freedom to really dig into it. this summer i'll be able to go NYC and have time to actually join a band and practice, for the Brooklyn Labor Day W.I. Carnival steelband competition. been wanting to do this for 5 years now and never had the time....

i can honestly say there's so many things i'm interested in, that i would never be bored....

(oh - i'm not retired but am laid off; i stuck it out at that miserable job i loathed til they gave me the heave-ho with the layoff package -- and am NOT lookin a work for a good long while. <span style="font-style: italic"><span style="font-weight: bold">(u SEET Nylah!!!)</span></span> Between salary continuation, severance, and unemployment mi can take a good long break - if i feel to, i can set on my flat behine for a year. and when i'm dam good and ready to work again it won't be another 9-6 office politricks job nosirEE. i'd like to return to the travel business, that was my favorite kinda work, and my 'real' career - before i got sucked into the office crap)

I imagine doing some of the same things my father did when he retired and my mother died soon after.

- Meet friends for coffee at Tim Horton's in the morning and read the paper and argue about politics.

- Volunteer at the local hospital a couple days a week.

- Swimming at the local community center or playing cards and shuffleboard at the senior citizens clubhouse in the afternoons.

- Evenings will be a time to get drunk and pass out.

In the summer I hope to spend much of my time up north fishing.

Throw in a visit or two to JA each year and that will be my retirement in a nutshell.

i think she resistant caw she still want to 'be a part of', but demma drive har crazy wid dem dependence on her and typ[ical wrkplace buffoonry. So mi a try show har dat it nuh worth it!!! But she old school, probly feel like if u not working, u not living/worthwhile etc.

Did your mom have retirement time before she passed, or was she always stay at home? Pity they never got to spend the time together!

Hey tuffy..., she worked part time and yes she died just as their retired life began.

Very sad indeed!

Made me realize that I should not put off things that are important for when I retire because you just don't know what the future holds.

Milo the same happened to my dad - worked til 70 and passed just as he was bout to retire to his dream life in Arizona with his new wife. So sad. She went anyway and is still there enjoying it to this day, and still misses him, as do I.

tuffy i think you are right on point about old school folks 'of a certain generation' feeling useless if them not actually working; that's how they were taught, member they were depression-era so having a work was critical for them. maybe us younger ones can help them to see there's still more of life to be enjoyed, on their own terms and their own time....

I often think that when i do fully retire, i'd like to do volunteer work. so many places need help but cannot pay ppl for their services - places like Habitat for Humanity, children's advocacy, civil rights & animal rescue organizations, women & children's shelters - maybe she could volunteer some time doing good works like that -

and yes, steel drums

and yes the place was real miserable. they weren't tryna make me leave, in fact i've been asking for the layoff for 2-3 years and they wouldn't let me go, cause i knew stuff that nobody else in the country knew how to do and they needed me. but u think they would let me train anyone else on this information? NOOOO. i did sneak some training in anyhow, just as a stopgap, but every time i went on vacation the managers never bothered to have anyone cover my work, just ignored it and left it all to pile up. would take me a full workweek jus to clear up the mess and calm down my customers every time. Their work practices and ethics just sucked, my manager did not know how to "manage" -- slackers never got dealt with, the rest of us with some work ethics had to bear the brunt of their lazyness; 'teacher's pets' always got the bly no matter how lazy they were or how inaccurate their work was.....this went on unabated for 6 years; when i spoke up about it (which of course i did) it was me that was the 'troublemaker' - never the ones that weren't doing their work. I've worked in other corporate environemnts that were not run like that, so i knew i didn't have to put up with that nonsense. Eventually i was just over it with their kinda practices and politriks, and wanted outta that environment. can't stand hypocrites and unfair practices.

on the day they laid me off the Big Boss was laffin when she said <span style="font-style: italic">"well Caf, you've waited for this day for a long time and it is finally here!"</span>
so i said <span style="font-style: italic">"omg can i get up and dance on the table right now??" </span> . LOL, then she said "well no you mussi sign de papers first" and laughed some more; it was a joyous day. And probly the first & only time this task wasn't misery for her too, when she dint have some smaddy bawlin inna her office at this news. hehe

it was also supreemly gratifying that when i got back from vacation and went in to colleck my things from the desk, i found out my bad manager had also been let go, the slackers are now getting called out on their ish and being held to account for their work, and many of the things i had been suggesting for these past few years, had in fact been put into place by the new manager. and i no haffi deal with ANY of it anymore. <span style="font-style: italic">MWA ha ha ha. </span>
