Good Morning:
I have spent the past 14 months, including 2 months in Portland, researching the history of this most beautiful of parishes. I think I might be on the way to a book. This would be my second book as an author and publisher and my 5th project going back to the publication of A FAIRFIELD HISTORY in 2005. That project, a history of my neighbourhood in Canada, was a critical success and almost a financial success. Since then I have worked with other authors on their projects, including the folks from Sturge Town in St. Ann.
By November I hope to be in Kingston scheduling the printing of PORTLAND: THE OTHER JAMAICA. At about 120 pages and with 50 historic photos I hope this will be the peoples history: a book that the people of Portland will want to buy, read and share with their families and friends.
The book will tell the story of the remarkable people who have called Portland home. They of course include Nanny, Captain Baker, Sir Harold Allan, Ken Jones, Errol Flynn, the Weston family, Michael Lee Chin, the heroes of World War I, the railway workers, the estate owners and the farmers. If you have memories of the Titchfield Hotel, Titchfield School, the banana trains, the banana boats, Frenchman's Cove, the adventures of Errol Flynn, or just everyday life in Nonsuch, Millbank, Swift River, or your village, I would love to hear from you.
Your contribution will ensure that the complete story of Portland is told.
Yours truly,
Ken Roueche
