Feel Bad

I feel bad for a really nice lady in my town.

She opened up a nice little gem of a cafe in this hell hole of a town and it is a place I like to frequent. I'm sitting here right now and I notice that because of the location of her business (downtown)the place is full of homeless folks.

Now I have nothing against the homeless (there but by the grace of God go I, yada yada etc...) but I can't take the smell of these men who do not wash, the whole place stinks.

They beg for money and as soon as they have enough money to buy a small coffee they come in and linger. The poor lady is seeing her business dwindle before her eyes.

She needs to have a 'table time limit' (ala Tim Hortons) and if she can't do it herself, she should get a helper who'll be willing to move the loiterers along.

She does have a sign up that states 20 minute table limit but they leave, go out and beg for five minutes and then they are right back in and it is just one continuous flow of the same people.

Anyway, I have to sign off now because I cannot take it any more. The smell is unbearable, even from clear across the room.

I guess it is the one factor she did not consider when she opened at this location.

Going into business for yourself is full of hurdles, and I honestly can't see a way for her to clear this one.

i remember being in a fast foodish place in jamaica and the homeless lady pay fi har food and a sit down and eat it and the guard run her outta the place

she does have the right to refuse service. As harsh as that sounds she might want to implement that. If homeless people are affecting her business then she does need to find a way to manage the problem.

I'm not a big fan of denying peeps service but if its stopping others from entering the premises then it needs to be addressed.

My favorite restauarant downtown has the same issue. They have many peeps beggng for change for those entering the restaurant, and they are really agressive about it. It has even intimidated me on occassion cause they will physcially block u if u turn them down.

The restaurant had to get some one to stand by the door and head off contact between them and the customers because ppl were choosing to eat elsewhere.

But it shouldnt be done rudely either cause everyone deserves dignity.

There's a little eatery that David likes to go for brekky in the morning cause they're open early. I, on the other hand, don't like to go there because of the clientele.

Many of the them are dirty looking - lanky, stringy uncombed hair, no or bad teeth, grimy clothes and yeah BO for daaayyyyzzzz....

I find that shyte really off-putting cause mi stomach easy fi sick.

But tell yuh wah, try to turn these people away or talk to them about him dem look, smell or behave, an de nex day yuh come fi opn yuh business an yuh a go find say yuh window brok, or yuh ha spray paint all ova de place.

That's why location is key. An why some place cyaa betta...

very true Nunya. I agree.

ppl need to remember that we sometimes help to create the problem to - unwittingly.

Homeless ppl will gravitate to spots or stores where ppl have given them change in the past. So as much as I dont always want to say no, I do because u get targeted after that.

This became a big problem in our Whyte Avenue strip until it became a huge problem for all the businesses along that road. Now, I wouldnt open a business along there even though it used to be a highly desirable business location.

I didn't mention this to the owner but she may be better off to pay these homeless men to stay out of her cafe. I know it's extortion but I think in the end it will be better for her.

I honestly think a couple of them have not bathed yet this year. It is impossible to eat in there even after they leave. Their stench has become permanent.
