The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has released new data showing that upwards of 48% of African-American women are infected with herpes simplex 2 virus.
Overall, Americans are infected with the STD at 16%. Infection rates for American women are nearly twice as high as American men, with 21%, compared to 11.5 %.
However, when race is factored into the equation, the disparities become greatly magnified.
African-Americans currently have a 39.2% infection rate, compared to European-Americans, who have a 12.3% infection rate. That means African-Americans are infected nearly three times more than Whites with the incurable herpes simplex 2.
But when race and gender are factored in, the problems become epidemic, with African-American women showing the highest infection rate of herpes simplex 2 at 48%.
“This study serves as a stark reminder that herpes remains a common and serious health threat in the United States,” said Dr. Kevin Fenton, director of the CDC’s National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD and TB Prevention. “Everyone should be aware of the symptoms, risk factors and steps that can be taken to prevent the spread of this lifelong and incurable infection.”
Dr. Fenton presented the data at the National STD Prevention Conference in Atlanta, Georgia last week.
The CDC reports that most people do not know they are infected and transmitting the disease. It recommends that people seek medical help as soon as they see a rash or sore on their genitals.
