Last week I applied for a job for the City of Toronto's Waste Management as a Class 1 AZ tractor trailer driver.
Union wage is $30.06 per hour plus benefits.good city job.

Currently I am a registered Driver instructor and a registered Air Brake instructor at Canadas largest Heavy Equipment and truck driving school.
I have 19 years of safe truck driving experience.I also work for a contactor for the City of Toronto transportation Services plowing and road salting and have extensive experience.One of the students whom Im training -Abduhl Ishaad also applied for the job and currently is going for his road test with the Ministry of Transportation next week to get his truck license

he applied for the job the same day(last week) I did and the Job posting closed on March 25.
Today hes out on a 4 hour lesson with me and he gets a phone call from the City of Toronto Human rescources dept on his cell. They present him a job offer, asked when he will have his license by and tell him he has to come in for a medical.

So, here I am-more experienced-have the required drivers license already plus the required credentials---and the City offers him a position..[censored]?

tell you why. my name isnt Abduhl and it turns out the lady who called him was also the same denomination.

So here I am, now I am going to call my City Councillor and the Ontario Human Rights Commisssion and file a complaint.

I cant think of any other reason WHY the City would hire someone who doesnt even meet the qualification or attain the same credentials or licence. token ticket---minority hiring.

I suspect a lot of folks on this board have been denied jobs they were very qualified for due to the simple fact that the person doing the hiring was not "like them".

So while I am sorry that your hopes of getting this job were dashed, please know that you are not the only one that has suffered discrimination. It's a pretty common thing.

You said they wanted to know when he would get his license. I can't tell from what you wrote but will he be qualified once he gets the license ?

If he is qualified once he gets his license you don't have a case, regardless of how long you have been doing this.....unless a certain number of years of experience is also posted as a requirement.

Experience and qualifications are two different things.

I don't have a problem with hiring <span style="font-style: italic">qualified</span> minorities who have been systematically kept out of certain jobs because of discrimination. With that kind of history, it is difficult to find candidates who also have years of experience.

HO - you may have an valid argument if the original job posting specifies the requirement of 'license' at time of application. If candidate did not meet the essential requirement of having the license at time of application he should have been screened out.

There is also the possibility that whomever reviewed the apps feels you are overqualified and would not stay long. Also unfair.

Congadulations that the City of Toronto going to put a guy based on his ethnicity behind the wheel of a 87,000 pound truck and let him free on the highways--no experience required.

And yes Sistah D--according to the Student (Abdul) who applied for the job,,, the lady in HR asked when he was going to obtain his AZ license. And the job specifically required experience and hold a valid Ontario commercial AZ licence.
