So last week all of Japan paused for yet another festival...the penis festival (can I put that word on here since Mokatee edit my other word?
). My daughter attended and sent me the photos which I cannot post here. There were P lollipops and a P shrine was paraded through the streets...but the one picture which reminded me of a post from yesterday was two seven year old girls who were taking pictures next to the P of a older white guy who was walking around in nothing but a T-shirt. They were smiling and holding their cameras at arms length to take pictures with it.
Must be a pedofiles dream day, but in Japan it has special meaning
Every year on March 15 a huge two and a half meter wooden phallus is carried the short distance between two shrines attracting visitors from all over Japan and international media attention. The festival is fun with a lot of sake drinking, however the background of the festival is rather more serious. A shrine is a place of worship. It houses divine spirits and preserves the memory and practice of many aspects of Japanese culture. This file is intended to introduce some of the history, mythology, rituals, and customs of Tagata Jinja.
Anyway...I DO NOT CONDONE this mind you, nor am I posting this to say that anything is OK or NOT ok. Just pointing out that there are things going on in other cultures that amaze me.
When my daughter sent me the pictures I could not believe it.
