Here is the important point you are missing, that statistic may be true for the US and other rich western Nations, but definitely not so for African and (socalled) Third World countries.
Now there is a difference between when some one is trying to save your life or ease your pain and they unknowingly or accidentally increase your pain or cause your death. Than when someone with malicious intention harms you or cause your death. In the short term the effects are the same but in the long term they will be a great difference.
