Friday, 23 April 2010
Jah Cure.Popular reggae entertainer, Jah Cure has been granted bail after being arrested Thursday afternoon by the St. Andrew North Police.
The singer, whose given name is Siccaturie Alcock, was reportedly seen smoking a ganja spliff in the Constant Spring area and was arrested as the police intensify their anti-street crime drive in the Corporate Area.
He was granted $5,000 station bail Thursday evening.
The entertainer is booked to appear in court on Monday.
This is the second time in recent months that Jah Cure has found himself in trouble with the law.
Last November he was arrested in Trinidad for failing to pay nearly US$20,000 to a businessman.
He was spared jail time after agreeing to make payment.
Jah Cure also spent nine years in jail in Jamaica for rape.
And the St. Andrew North Police will be adopting a zero tolerance approach to offenders as they step up their anti-street crime drive.
In addition to ganja smokers, the police will be targeting illegal vendors and persons who sell illicit goods on the streets.
Crime Chief for St. Andrew North, Deputy Superintendent Altermoth Campbell says Thursday's arrest of Jah Cure is a sign of things to come.
"Well we have embarked on a new initiative in the division. It is coming from the Police High Command, the street crime initiative. Vendors who sell ganja, walking around smoking ganja all those illegal and illicit activities we are approaching it with zero-tolerance," said Deputy Superintendent Campbell.
