JAMAICA FOR SALE PROFILE
DELLA MANLEY
Music is a very important part of Jamaica for Sale. A number of musicians and their publishers/producers donated their music: Della Manley (Riverside Music, Fire House Red Productions), The Mighty Gabby (Eddie Grant, Ice Records, Warner Chappel Music, Ltd.) and Burning Spear (Winston and Sonia Rodney, Universal). We are very grateful for their support and will be profiling each artist.
First Profile is Della Manley whose two songs, "The Garden" and "Take Good Care of Me" are featured - "The Garden" opens the film and "Take Good Care of Me" closes it.
The Garden was inspired by listening to a piece of music that I had enjoyed. Very often when I write songs my processing and appreciation of other artists triggers my own creativity in some shape or form. “Take Good Care" was different. I had written a verse of this song after I heard about a chemical spill.. and put it down for a bit.. Out of the blue, a fellow song writer/ producer contacted me to ask if a song that might be appropriate for a project he'd been commissioned to do - a compilation of songs by various artists to promote environmental awareness. I finished the song but never heard from him."
In the Garden there is the refrain "Why?", it is a refrain that is repeated throughout Jamaica for Sale. Della included this refrain in the song because "these decisions made to destroy the environment are incomprehensible to me. Man/woman is an integral part of nature. We destroy nature we destroy ourselves."
““Take Good Care" - is a call to action, that we must appreciate and take care of the natural environment that we depend upon. In this version, Della duets with Tarrus Riley. "I began my third album, during the production of “Take Good Care" the song seemed to beg other voices.. I had dueted with Tarrus on his 2nd album "Parables" on his song "Family", so I asked him if he'd consider joining me on this song. It was a wonderful experience to work with him in the studio again."
Della is committed to raising our awareness about the importance of the environment and her music is part of her dedication to seeing that we change our attitudes and behaviours. "I hope that we do whatever and everything we can to maintain preserve and improve this amazing country of ours. That the campaign /awareness for littering and preservation of the environment becomes a part of everyone's DNA. That recycling becomes reflexive rather than a voluntary action for all of us. .. that we educate - which is the reason why I agreed with the producer of the song that it be used as the theme song for the Green Expo in 2009. Finally that we learn to love the environment, each other and ourselves. These are my hopes for Jamaica."
Thank you Della!
